SPANISH FORT, Ala.—Fire swept through a residence on Rebel Road here early Sunday morning, killing two persons and destroying the home.
Miss Jane Mallini, 16, and her grandmother, Mrs. Grace Jones, 74, died in their bedrooms. The girl's mother, Mrs. Virginia Mallini, owner of the home, was in Atlanta when the fire occurred.
Miss Mallini and Mrs. Jones were the only occupants of the house when the fire occurred, according to information given by the Spanish Fort Volunteer Fire Department.
Volunteer Fire Chief Bobby Wilson said Mrs. George Atkins, a neighbor of the Mallini's, saw the fire just after 1 a.m. and told her husband, who went to the home and broke open a back door.
But, Wilson said, the flames and smoke in the home were too strong and all Atkins could do was turn in the alarm, which was received at 1:45 a.m. When members of the department got there, Wilson said, the house was completely involved; and the firemen, knowing there were two people inside, tried to keep the flames confined to the front of the house.
Wilson said the cause of the fire is undetermined, but circumstances indicate that it started in the attic over the center portion of the L-shaped house.
He said the fire probably smouldered in the attic for some time and then broke through the living room ceiling, supplying air to the attic and causing the flames to burst out.
He added that in all probability portions of the ceiling in the hall leading to the bedrooms collapsed, cutting off escape from the back bedrooms.
Wilson noted that the height and construction of the crank-open windows would have made them extremely difficult to get out of.
Wilson said firemen found Miss Mallini under her bed. The girl's grandmother, he said, was found in another bedroom on the floor beside the bed.
A family friend said Miss Mallini had returned from a date not long before the fire was assumed to have started and probably had not gone to sleep. He also said that Mrs. Jones was an invalid, having been ill for some time.
The deaths and the destruction of the $35,000 home is the third tragedy to come to the family in recent years. Neighbors say the Mallini's were burned out of a home in Mobile in 1964. Grover Mallini, husband of Mrs. Mallini, died only months ago. Forrest Little, a resident of Spanish Fort Estates and ex-vice president of the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, has started a Virginia Mallini Fund to help the family with expenses. The first National Bank of Fairhope will be trustee for the funds.
There will be a double funeral service for the victims. Radney Funeral Home in Mobile has announced services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday from their chapel.
Joint funeral services for Mrs. Jones and Miss Mallini will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Radney Funeral Home. Burial for Mrs. Jones will be in Pine Crest Cemetery, and for Miss Mallini, in Catholic Cemetery.
Mrs. Jones was a member of the Spanish Fort Methodist Church and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a native of Columbus, Miss.
