He married GLADYS HELEN EWING on January 12, 1955 in Richmond, Virginia,⁶⁰⁴³ daughter of MYRA SUTHERLAND STANLEY and FRANCIS WILLARD EWING. She was born July 10, 1926 in Ohio,³⁰¹⁴ and died March 2, 2012.⁴⁷¹⁷ She is buried in Sherwood Burial Park, Salem, Virginia.⁴⁵⁶

Gladys Ewing Lax, 85, of Roanoke, formerly of Orange, passed away on Friday, March 2, 2012. Daughter of Francis and Myra Ewing, Gladys was born on July 10, 1926, in Ohio. She was a graduate of the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and obtained a Master's Degree from the College of William and Mary. She devoted her professional life to teaching music to elementary school children, retiring from Orange Elementary School. After moving to Roanoke, she was active in the choir and other musical activities at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church. She was a talented artist and renowned gardener.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Leon Lax; a son, Michael Stanley Lax; and sister, Carolyn Woodall Freeman.

She is survived by a daughter, Susan Lax O'Brien and her husband, James B. O'Brien, of Roanoke; a son, Andrew W. Lax and his wife, Jude A. Starrett, of Charlotte, North Carolina; and four grandchildren, Eric O'Brien, Michael O'Brien, Jordan Lax, and Austen Lax.

Family and friends visited from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2012, at Oakey's South Chapel. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, 2012, at Raleigh Court Presbyerian Church. Interment followed at Sherwood Memorial Park.
