Rev. H. S. Miller Retires In East; Richmond Native

Rev. Henry Scott Miller, a native of Richmond, has resigned his post as rector of St. James Episcopal church at Skaneateles, N. Y.

His parents were Edwin H. and Elizabeth (Scott) Miller. His father was a bookkeeper at the Second National bank, according to city directories.

The Rev. Mr. Miller, who was rector of the New York church for 26 years, was graduated from Earlham college in 1915, and is the author of a book on early travel in Indiana.

He entered the General Theological seminary in New York City and was graduated in 1918. In 1920, he received the degree of Master of Arts at Wabash college in recognition of graduate work at Columbia university.

He served St. John church at Crawfordsville from 1918 to 1921 and later was rector at Connersville before returning to New York City as curate at Trinity church.

He was named vicar of Epiphany chapel, Washington, D. C. and in 1926 was back in New York as associate vicar of Trinity chapel.

Harry Kitchin, of Richmond, who formerly lived in Skaneateles, said that as a boy the Rev. Mr. Miller lived at 204 North Tenth street, now the Knights of Columbus clubhouse.

Kitchin said the Rev. Mr. Miller makes it a point to visit the clubhouse to look at various rooms when he visits in Richmond.

Rev. Henry Scott Miller Succumbs at 80, Former Rector of St. James' Church

Many Skaneateles residents attended the funeral November 25, of The Rev. Henry Scott Miller, 80, a former rector of St. James Episcopal Church of Skaneateles, who died Tuesday, November 22, in Elmira where he has resided since resigning from the local church in 1957.

The R. Rev. Walter M. Higley, Bishop of the Diocese of Central New York officiated, assisted by the Venerable Bradford H. Tite, Archdeacon of the Diocese of Central New York; the Rev. S. W. Hale Jr., rector of Grace Church, Elmira; the Rev. S. W. Hale Sr. retired of the Church of the Advent, Boston, Mass.; the Rev. John H. Teeter, rector of St. James Church, Skaneateles and Mr. Martin Townsend, Seminarian.

After cremation, interment will be in Fort Hill Cemetery, Auburn.

Rev. Miller was born Sept. 30, 1886 in Richmond, Ind., the son of Edwin N. and Elizabeth (Scott) Miller. He was graduated from Earlham College Earlham, Ind. In 1915, having completed his entire eight years of preparatory and college work in five. After a summer with the State Library at Indianapolis he engaged in the compilation of a book of early travel in Indiana. He entered the General Theological Seminary in New York City, graduating in 1918. In 1920 he was awarded the degree of Master of Arts at Wabash College, in recognition of graduate work at Columbia.

He was ordained priest in St. John's Church, Craffordsville, Ind., where he served from 1918 to 1921. He later served a year at Trinity Church, Connersville, Ind. and then returned to New York City as curate of Trinity Church, for two years. In 1924 he was appointed Vicar of Epiphany Chapel, Washington, D.C. and in 1916 he returned to New York to become Associate Vicar of Trinity Chapel. He ame to St. James' Church, Skaneateles, in the fall of 1930.

Many of his parishioners remember the 25th anniversary of his service here Dec. 1955.

He succeeded Rev. Arthur B. Merriman and the Rev. Miller was succeeded by Rev. David M. Gillespie.

Memorial Sunday For Rev. Miller

A memorial service honoring the late Rev. Henry Scott Miller, former rector of St. James Episcopal Church, will be held at the 4 p.m. prayer service at St. James Church, Sunday.

The Rev. Mr. Miller, 80, died Nov. 22, in Elmira where he had made his home since 1957 when he retired from the Skaneateles church. He was its rector 27 years. He was well known in the Skaneateles and Auburn area.

The public has been invited to the service.
