Mary Freeman Becomes Bride in Cathedral

Wedding vows were pledged today in SS. Peter and Paul cathedral by Miss Mary Virginia Freeman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warren D. Freeman, and Charles E. Murphy, son of Mrs. Alice f. Murphy. Msgr. Raymond R. Nell performed the single-ring ceremony and the Rev. Charles E. Ross said the mass. Music was by Miss Mary Joan Hughey, organist. Two vases of white flowers and candelabra were placed on the altar.

The bride, whose father gave her in marriage, was gowned in white embossed organdy, designed with high round neckline, ruffled yoke and a long train which was outlined with a ruffle. Her fingertip veil of illusion was held in place by a seed pearl tiara and she carried a prayer book on which was placed an orchid.

Matron of honor and only attendant of the bride was Mrs. Robert W. Wurtz. Her gown was of petal pink marquisette and she carried a cascade bouquet of roses. Robert J. Murphy was the best man and Warren and William Freeman, John F. Murphy and Dr. Robert W. Wurtz were ushers.

A wedding breakfast and reception were held in the Marott hotel Hunters lodge. The couple is taking a wedidng trip to Miami Beach, Fla.

CHARLES E. "TODD" MURPHY, 78, Indianapolis, died Nov 1. He worked fro George O. Desautels Co. for 39 years, retiring as vice president in 1984. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was given a Purple Heart. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity. Services: 10 a.m. Nov. 4 in St. Luke Catholic Church, of which he was a member. Calling: 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 3 in Leppert & Hurt Mortuary. Entombment: Calvary Mausoleum. Survivors: wife Virgiina Freeman Murphy; daughters Mary ANn Atkins, Ellen Murphy, Virginia Schmidt; brother Robert J. Murphy; sisters Alice Wurtz, Mary Rita Madden; six grandchildren.

INDIANAPOLIS - Mary Virginia Murphy, 101, of Indianapolis, entered into eternal rest on Monday, March 30, 2020. She was born August 15, 1918 in Muncie, Indiana to the late Warren Dwight and Irene Cecelia (Connolly) Freeman.

Virginia was a graduate of Cathedral Grade School and St. Agnes Academy and attended Butler University. She was always first and foremost dedicated to her faith and family.

She was a longtime member of St. Luke Catholic Church, The Proctor Club, and St. Augustine Guild. She loved sports of all sorts, especially basketball and the Indianapolis 500. She was happiest making memories with her family and friends.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward "Tod" Murphy; her granddaughter, Kelly Schmidt; her son-in-law, Tom Atkins, Jr. and her siblings, Charlotte Beyer, Warren Freeman and Bill Freeman.

She is survived by her daughters; Mary Ann Atkins, Ellen Murphy and Virginia (Bruce) Schmidt; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Due to the current guidelines limiting public gatherings, a private committal service will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis. A Memorial Mass and Celebration for Virginia will be held at a later date.
