Third son of Joseph and Dora (Kelley) Painter. He married Grace Catherine Wisman (Apr. 6, 1895-Jun. 13, 1987), daughter of Joseph Franklin and Lue Ella (Maphis) Wisman on Dec. 10, 1913 in Hagerstown, Md. Grace was born in St. Luke, Va.
Richard belonged to the Progressive Brethren Church and was a Republican. A farmer, he was fond of horses and liked to go to the horse races. He was talented in music, played the harmonica, was a very good dancer and sang tenor at church. He would often to to Mayberry Steed's home and play different musical instruments. He was a very good ice skater.
An amusing story about Richard was told by his wife. She had hung his overcoat out on the porch to air but then forgot to bring it in. Richard happened to go out onto the porch after dark and thought it was a man. When Grace looked out, he had gotten a stick and was beating it as hard as he could.
Richard died of heart disease.
