Mrs. Fannie Pettijohn, 63 years old, a visitor here from Wichita, was struck by a motor car at 9 o'clock last night at Twelfth and Locust streets. Her injuries are not dangerous.
The car, a west-bound Ford coupe, did not stop. A crowd of men, angered by the apparent negligence of the driver, ran after the car calling to the driver to stop.
William Stevenson, detective, took up the pursuit as the fleeing car turned north into Oak street. He called to the driver, who increased the speed of the car. Stevenson fired three shots without effect. The detective commandeered a car and followed. He caught up with the Ford cat at Eleventh and Harrison streets.
E. H. Cassing, a painter, 32 years old, 3516 Bales avenue, was in the car. He denied having struck Mrs. Pettijohn. Cassing was arrested and his car was sent to the Down Town garage. There a piece of a woman's dress was removed from the front axle, according to the police.
Mrs. Pettijohn is visiting two sons, Cash and Earl Pettijohn, at their rooms, 1317 1/2 Locust street. She was taken to the General hospital where her injuries were dressed and she was taken home. Mrs. Pettijohn received cuts on the head and face and a possible fracture of some ribs.
Cash Pettijohn, who saw the accident, said at the General hospital the car that struck his mother was a Chevrolet coupe, and was going east, turning north on Locust street.
