WALTER P. POWERS DEAD

COUNCIL GROVE — Walter Preston Powers, owner and operator of the powers IGA Grocery Store, died Thursday evening in his home after suffering a heart attack.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Methodist Church and graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in the cemetery in Netawaka. The Kendall Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family has suggested donations to a memorial fund to be established in the Methodist Church.

Mr. Powers was born Sept. 16th, 1907, in the Netawaka community and was graduated in 1930 from the Kansas Sate University in Manhattan. He was employed by the Fleming Company in Topeka from 1932 until 1947, when he opened his store in Council Grove. Mr. Powers was a member and past president of the Chamber of Commerce. He was preceded in death by one daughter, who died in infancy, and by his mother. He is survived by his wife, Alice Fern Powers, of the home; one son, Capt. Norman Powers, who recently returned to Council Grove after a tour of active duty with the army, and his father, Jay Powers, of Whiting.

Fern Powers Dies

Alice Fern Powers, a former Council Grove resident, died early Friday morning, March 13, 1998, at Holiday Resort in Emporia. She was 89.

She was born Nov. 10, 1908, at Wetmore, the daughter of Dan and Alice Riggs Clinkenbeard. She graduated from Wetmore High School and attended Kansas State Normal School, Emporia, for two years.

Her marriage to Walter Powers was on May 17, 1931. He died Oct. 13, 1966.

Mrs. Powers was a homemaker, taught at East Powhatten School, and she and her husband owned and operated Powers IGA here.

She was wheelchair-bound for many years, created ways for self care and continued to use her talents when possible for the benefit of others. Mrs. Powers was a member of the Council Grove United Methodist Church, and was noted for impeccable records during her long-time service as financial secretary.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, and a brother, Clayton Clinkenbeard.

Survivors include a son, Norman Powers, Emporia, and two grandchildren, Kevin Powers and Beth Powers.

Private interment was Saturday at Netawaka Cemetery. A memorial service is planned at 3 p.m., this Friday, at Council Grove United Methodist Church.

Memorials have been established with the Council Grove United Methodist Church and the Emporia Tree Board.
