DIED.

PUTNAM — At her home in this city, Tuesday morning, May 21, 1895, Mrs. Frances M. Putnam, beloved wife of Hon. H. C. Putnam, aged 35 years, 4 month and 8 days.

As we make ready to go to press, the funeral cortege is winding its way to the city of the dead with the mortal remains on one with whom we were wont to hold pleasant intercourse; one well known in this city and county where most of her life had been spent; one who attached to her, by her pleasing personality and vivacity of manner all whom she met; one who with her native gifts and executive ability was an efficient helper in any cause she undertook.

We cannot realize the truth of the words as we writ them, "Mrs. Putnam is dead." So full of life and animation always, how can it be! Yet true it is that death has cut off in her prime, one to whom life seemed as assured and to whom life held out as alluring prospects as to any of us. We shall hear her cheery voice and see her face no more on earth forever.

Frances Sutherland was the only daughter of J.A. and Helen Sutherland, of Sylvester, Green county. She was bron January 13, 1960 and grew to womanhood the light of her father's house.

When twenty-one years of age, February 6, 1881, she was married to Hon. H. C. Putnam of this city, who survives her. They came at once to Brodhead to live and this has since been her home.

Fond of society and fitted by nature to shine in it, she soon became a recognized social leader. She was a prominent member of the W. R. C. and held many responsible offices, among them that of president of Wesley W. Patton Corps. She was serving for the second time as Senior Vice President at the time of her death. Only last winter she joined the order of the Eastern Star, at Madison, and there she made many friends.

Mrs. Putnam has not been in firm health for a number of years, but beneath her sprightly manner only her most intimate friends ever detected the signs of suffering. Her last illness was brief, only a fortnight, but it was a time of severe suffering. When not delirious with pain she knew and spoke with her friends until within an hour or so of her death, which occurred at about nine o'clock on Tuesday morning.

The funeral services held at the house to-day, were conducted by Rev. J. A. Willey, pastor of the M. E. church, who read a brief sketch of her life and made a few sympathetic and appropriate remarks. The song service was by Mrs. Jessie Niles and Mrs. Hattie Clarke. The member of the Relief Corps were present in a body and accompanied the remains to the grave.

The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful, attesting the love of many friends.456
