Curly graduated from New Hanover High School in 1941, playing football and baseball in his junior and senior years. After graduation he was offered a football scholarship to Wake Forest University. Instead, he decided to attend the Joe Stripp Baseball School in Orlando, Florida. He signed a contract with the Boston Red Sox minor league team and played until he was called to duty for his country. He joined the U S Navy serving in WWII on the USS Tangier and the USS Currituck, and in the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post 10 and St. Matthews Lutheran Church. He retired from the New Hanover County ABC System and in his younger years, co-founded The (world famous) Spot at Wrightsville Beach with the late Roy Rudd. Curly had a photographic memory, read 2-3 books a week, loved Carolina Basketball, the Boston Red Sox & the Detroit Lions. For over 20 years he hosted his annual Super Bowl Party. We know in our hearts that he waited to leave this earth until he helped to put a Republican in the White House again.
