Will and Probate for Abel Shedd Jr.

Abel Shedd Jr. died intestate. His estate consisted of 395 acres of land and $3481.50. His wife Ruth received one-third as the widow's dower and the remaining two-thirds was divided equally between his eight surviving children, amounting to $316.50 each, which included a portion of his land.

Pursuant to a warrant to us directed by the Honorable Abel Parker Esq. Judge of the Probate of Wills &c. for the County of Cheshire, we the subscribed having been first duly sworn as said warrant directs have appraised upon oath all the real estate whereof Capt. Abel Shedd Jr. late of Rindge in said County, deceased, intestate, died ?, within this state as follows, viz.: The whole of the home & farm situated in said Ridge containing by measure three hundred and forty acres and thirty four hundred and eighty dollars one and fifty cents. A certain pasture in the Town of Stoddard being fifty five acres, value three hundred sixteen dollars and 50 cents, total value $3798.00.

After setting off the widow's dower, we find therein remains Three Hundred and Nineteen Acres and thirty five square rods of Land amounting in value to Two Thousand Five Hundred and Thirty two Dollars, which we have divided among the eight children of said deceased, being in value to each three hundred and sixteen dollars and fifty cents as follows viz.

To Ruthy Kimball wife of William Kimball Junr. daughter of said deceased, a Tract of Pasture Land being part of Lots No. fifteen and sixteen in the ninth area tenth range of Lots in Ridge, beginning at a stake and stones on the south side of the road leading by John Chadwick's being a corner of Asa Platt's Pasture, thence south fifteen degrees west, eighteen rods to a stake and stones on said Platt's pasture, thence south six and one half degrees east, on said Pasture, twelve and a half rods to a stake and stones, thence North seventy nine degrees west on Stephen Shafford's Pasture Forty six rods to a stake and stones, thence north twenty and an half degrees west on said Shafford's Pasture, thirty eight rods to a stake and stones at said road, thence south thirty one and an half degrees east on said road twelve rods, to a stake and stones, thence south twenty seven degrees east, thirty seven rods on said road to a stake and stones thence south forty three degrees east on said road forty six rods to the first named bounds, containing by measure twenty four acres and amounting to two hundred and ninety one dollars and fifty cents $291.50. Also to the same another tract of Pasture Land being part of Lot No. fifteen in the ninth Range and part of Lot No. fifteen in the tenth Range and lying north side of the before named road, and bounded thus, beginning at a stake and stones on said road, thence on Land set off to James A. Shedd North Nineteen and one half degrees East, eighteen rods to a stake and stones, thence on said Land north nine degrees east, forty six rods to a stake and stones in the swamp, thence on land set off to Abel Shedd, North seventy five degrees, west forty four rods and one half rod, to a stake and stones, thence on said Land south twenty one and one-half degrees west, thirty and one half rods to a stake and stones, at said road, thence said road to the first named bounds, containing by measure fifteen acres and forty nine square rods, amounting to one hundred dollars.

The said Ruthy Kimball to pay to Charles Shedd, George Shedd, Curtis Shedd & Rebekah Shedd heirs of said deceased, to each eighteen dollars and seventy five cents on or before the first day of April next, interest after the same amounting to seventy five dollars.

To Sally French, wife of Cummings French and daughter of said deceased, a tract of Pasture Land situated in the Town of Stoddard being an undivided half of part of Lots No. Ten and Eleven in the fourteenth range of lots and an undivided half of part of Lots No. Ten and Eleven in the fifteenth range of lots in said town, the said one half containing fifty five acres, according to the deeds of sad land valued Three Hundred and Sixteen Dollars and fifty cents.

To Abel Shedd son of said deceased the following described Premises (viz.) being part of Lots No. fifteen and sixteen in the ninth and tenth ranges of lots in Rindge, beginning at a stake and stones at the north side of the road leading by John Chadwick's, thence north fifty seven degrees east, on said Chadwick's Land twelve and one half rods to a stake and stones thence on said Chadwick's land, north one and an half degrees west eighty three rods to a stake and stones in the swamp and in the west line of Lot No. fifteen, thence south eight one and one half degrees east on Mr. Shatton's Land one hundred and one rods to a stake and stones at the south west corner of Jonah Carter's land, thence south thirteen and one half degrees west on land set off to James A. Shedd, one hundred and four rods, to a stake and stones near the edge of the swamp, thence on land set off to Ruthy Kimball, north seventy five degrees west forty four and one half rods to a stake and stones, thence on said land south twenty one and one half degrees west, thirty and an half rods to a stake and stones at said road, thence on said road north twenty seven degrees west twenty six rods, thence on same road north thirty and one half degrees west thirty rods to the first named bounds, containing by measure sixty acres valued three hundred and sixteen dollars and fifty cents.

To Charles Shedd son of said deceased the following described premises, viz. beginning the the willow tree marked near the dwelling house of Widow Shedd, thence on land set off as the Widow's Dower, south fifty degrees east fifty six and one half rods to a stake and stones, being the south east corner of Lot No. fourteen, thence on the south line of Lot No. thirteen south eighty degrees east forty two rods to the main bend in the reiver, thence south nine and an half degrees east six rods to the mouth of ? Pond Brook, thence on said brook south fifty one degrees west, thirteen and one half rods, thence on the same brook, south twenty eight and one half degrees west twenty rods, thence on same brook, south forty seven and one half degrees west, fifteen rods, thence on same brook south seventy degrees west, nine rods to the lower end of a ditch next to Asa Platt's land, thence on said Platt's land, north one degree west forty one rods to a stake and stones in a small brook, thence on said Platt's land, north eighty five degrees west, forty five rods to a stake and stones on Lot No. fourteen in the ninth range, thence on said Platt's land, north thirty five and an half degrees west, thirty eight rods to a stake and stones at the town road, thence north seventy degrees east sixteen rods to a stake and stones at the Cider Mill, thence north nineteen degrees west two and one half rods, thence south seventy seven and an half degrees east eight rods and one half to the willow tree first names with all the buildings standing thereon excepting what portions and parts are assigned to Wd. Rebekah Shedd, George Shedd, Curtis Shedd, and Rebekah Shedd, heirs of said deceased, containing by measure Eighteen acres and six square rods, valued Two Hundred Eighty five dollars and twenty five cents. To receive of Ruthy Kimball on or before the first day of April one thousand eight hundred and twenty one, eighteen dollars and seventy five cents.To receive of James A. Shedd on the twenty fifth day of February one thousand eight hundred and twenty five, twelve dollars and fifty cents.

To James Shedd son of said deceased, the following described premises (viz.) being part of Lots No. fourteen and fifteen in the ninth and tenth ranges of Lots in Rindge beginning at a stake and stones, the west side of the road in the Line of Jonah Carter's land, thence on said Carters Land north twenty nine degrees west, fifty eight rods to a stake and stones at the south west corner of said Carter's lands, thence on land set off to Abel Shedd, south thirteen and one half degrees west one hundred and four rods to a stake and stones near the edge of the swamp, thence on land set off to Ruthy Kimball south nine degrees west forty six rods to a stake and stones at the ned of a wall, thence on said land south nineteen and one half degrees west eighteen rods to a stake and stones at the road leading by Joshua Chadwick's, thence by said road south seventy five degrees east twenty two rods and an half rod to a stake and stones, thence on said road south sixty three and one half degrees east thirty one rods to a stake and stones near the Guide post, thence on the road leading by said Carter's north three degrees east seventeen rods to a stake and stones, thence on same road north twenty five degrees east, thirty two rods to a stake and stones thence on same road north thirty five and one half degrees east, seventeen rods to a stake and stones, thence on same road north seventy two degrees east thirty and one half rods to a stake and stones at the bend in the road near the Cider Mill, thence on same road north seventeen degrees west twenty six rods to an oak tree marked, thence on same road north five degrees west fifty eight rods to a stake and stones, thence on same road north eleven degrees east twenty one rods to the first named bound, containing by measure twenty acres and twenty one square rods, valued three hundred and sixty six dollars and fifty cents.

The said James A. Shedd to pay Charles Shedd, Curtis Shedd, George Shedd and Rebekah Shedd to each twelve dollars and fifty cents making in the whole fifty dollars, to be paid on the twenty fifth day of February one thousand eight hundred and twenty five. Interest after.

To Curtis Shedd son of said deceased, the following described premises (viz.) being part of Lot No. thirteen in the tenth range of lots, beginning at a white pine tree marked, on the east line of said lot, thence north seventy degrees west, seventy two rods to a stake and stones, thence south twenty degrees west on the said ? ? eight rods, thence on the same south forty one degrees west sixteen rods to a stake and stones, thence south seventy one and one half degrees west, sixteen rods to an elm tree marked, thence south eleven and one half degrees west twenty eight rods to a stake and stones on land set off to George Shedd, thence south eighty degrees east on the Widow's dower one hundred and nine rods to a tree marked on the east line of said Lot No. thirteen thence on said east line north one degree west fifty nine rods to the bounds first named, containing by measure twenty nine acres and six square rods, valued one hundred and seventy dollars and twenty five cents.

Also another piece of land situated in Rindge on Lot No. thirteen aforesaid, beginning at an oak tree marked, on the east line of said lot, thence south one degree east on Jonah Carter's land twenty five and one half rods to a stake and stones thence south eighty one degrees east on land set off to Rebekah Shedd, nineteen rods, to a stake and stones in the orchard, thence north one degree west on the Widow's Dower, twenty five rods and an half rod to a stake and stones, thence on the same, north eighty one degrees west, nineteen rods to the bounds first mentioned, containing by measure three acres valued seventy five dollars.

Also sixteen feet from the west end of the new barn, with a proportionable privilege in the barn yard, ?? valued forty dollars.

To receive of Ruthy Kimball on the first day of April one thousand eight hundred and twenty one, eighteen dollars and seventy five cents.

To receive of James A. Shedd, on the twenty fifth day of February one thousand and eight hundred and twenty five, twelve dollars and fifty cents.

To George Shedd son of said deceased, the following described premises, being part of Lots N. thirteen and fourteen in the south range of lots in Rindge, beginning at a stake and stones at the road and in a corner of Jonah Carter's land, thence south eleven degrees west on said road twenty two rods to a stake and stones, thence on said road south six degrees east fifty seven rods to a stake and stones, thence on the Widow's Dower, north eighty five and an half degrees east fifteen and one half rods to a stake and stones, thence north one and an half degrees east twelve rods to a stake and stones, thence north thirty one and an half degrees east, three rods to a stake and stones, thence south eight degrees east on the Widow's Dower forty three rods to a stake and stones, thence north eleven and an half degrees east twenty eight rods to an elm tree marked, thence on land set off to Rebekah Shedd, north sixty nine and an half degrees west, nineteen and one half rods to a stake and stones, thence on said land set off to Rebekah Shedd north thirteen and one half degrees east twenty four rods to the south line of said Carter's land, thence on said Carter's land north eighty one and one half degrees west, fifty four rods to the corner first named, containing by measure twenty two acres and eighty seven square rods, valued one hundred ninety seven dollars and twenty five cents.

Also another piece of land on said Lot No. fourteen beginning at the willow tree near the Widow Shedd's house, thence north ten degrees west, six rods, thence south seventy seven and one half degrees west ten rods to a stake and stones at the road, thence south twenty three degrees east seven and an half rods, thence north sixty nine and one half degrees east eight and one half rods to said willow tree, with the buildings thereon, valued sixty dollars, measuring sixty three sq. rods.

Also the north east Scaffold and the stall under it in the old barn, with a proportionable privilege in the threshing floor barnyard and well together with twenty five feet of the south end of the wood and hay house valued twenty eight dollars.

To receive of Ruthy Kimball on or before the first day of April one thousand eight hundred and twenty one, eighteen dollars and seventy five cents.

To receive of James A. Shedd on the twenty fifth day of February one thousand eight hundred and twenty five twelve dollars and fifty cents.

To Rebehak Shedd daughter of said deceased, the premises described as follows, viz. being a part of Lots No. thirteen and fourteen in the tenth range of lots in Rindge, beginning at a bunch of white birches, marked on the east line of said Lot No. thirteen, thence on the Widow's Dower north seventy six and an half degrees west sixty two rods to an oak tree marked, thence on said dower, south twenty degrees west twenty five rods, to a stake and stones, thence south seventy degrees east, seventy two rods on lads set off to Curtis Shedd, to a white pine tree marked, on the said east line, thence on the link of the lot north one degree west thirty four rods to the first name bounds, containing by measure eleven acres and sixty one square rods, valued one hundred and twenty dollars.

Also another tract of land, beginning at a stake and stones in the west line of said Lot No. thirteen thence on Jonah Carter's land south one degree east six and one half rods, to a stake and stones, thence north eighty one degrees west, nine and an half rods to a stake and stones, thence on land set off to George Shedd south thirteen degrees west twenty four and three fourth rods to a stake and stones, thence on same land south sixty nine and an half degrees east, nineteen and one half rods to an elm tree marked, thence north seventy degrees east six rods to a stake and stones, thence north thirty degrees east, twelve rods to a stake and stones, thence north one degree west, eighteen and one half rods on the said ? dower to a stake and stones in the orchard, thence north eighty one degrees west nineteen rods to the first name corner, containing by measure ten and an half acres, valued one hundred and twenty six dollars.

Also sixteen feet of the middle part of the new barn, with a proportionable privilege to the threshing floor barnyard and well, valued thirty nine dollars and twenty five cents.

To receive of Ruthy Kimball on or before the first day of April one thousand eight hundred and twenty, eighteen dollars and seventy five cents.

To receive of James A. Shedd on the twenty fifth day of February one thousand eight hundred and twenty five twelve dollars and fifty cents.

The Committee taking into consideration the condition of the foregoing described premises, their ? being rented for the present season, further state that it will be for the interest of the before named heirs that they should not come into possession of their several shares till the first day of April next, and that the present years rent be equally divided among them, ? forever to said Widow Rebekah Shedd and each of the before mentioned heirs all necessary privileges of passing and repassing to and from their ? portions of lands & buildings and so forth.
