Stuart E. Shumway
Stuart "Stu" Everett Shumway, 79, a 45-year resident of Olympia, died of natural causes Monday, Jan. 6, 1997, in Mother Joseph Care Center, Olympia.
He was born Jan. 14, 1917, in Omak to W.S. and Maude (Everett) Shumway. He graduated from Omak High School in 1835. He received a bachelor of arts degree in meteorology from the University of Washington in Seattle.
Mr. Shumway married Frances L. Torpey on Sept. 11, 1942, in Roswell, N.M.
He served in the Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945. He served in England and France.
Mr. Shumway worked for Washington state for 27 years as a meteorologist.
He was a member of the Dwarf Apple Tree Association, the Master Gardeners Association and the American Meteorologist Society.
Mr. Shumway enjoyed growing apple trees. He was well-known throughout the region for his knowledge of apples and the care of his fruit trees. He had 135 varieties of apples. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Frances, Olympia; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Patsy, Tumwater, and Steve and Mary Lou, Olympia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Ron Rogers, Olympia, and Mollie and Michel Boulanger, Paris, France; two sisters, Virginia Duarte, Seattle, and Mildred Pentz, Omak; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will begin at 3:30 o.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 1997, in Panorama City Garden Room, Lacey.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to Multiple Sclerosis, 6315 S. 19th, Tacoma, Wash. 98466, or a favorite charity.
