OMAK, Wash. — A prominent Okanogan County pioneer businessman, W. F. Shumway, 84, died at St. Martin's Hospital in Tonasket Sunday after a lingering illness.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Precht Funeral Chapel in Omak, the Rev. Roger Muisiner officiating. Burial will be at Omak Memorial Cemetery.
Born at Champlin, Minn. Mr. Shumway moved with his parents to Whatcom County at the age of 12.
On Nov. 12, 1902, he married Maude Everett at Custer, Wash. They living in Bellingham until 1905, when he came to Alma, which is now Okanogan.
The following year he moved to Omak where the family has since lived. Mr. Shumway formed the Omak Mercantile Co. in 1907 and operated it until he sold in 1921. In 1922 he formed a partnership which established and built the Petersen, Keller and Shumway Fruit Warehouses. He remained active in this firm until he retirement in 1948. The firm still operates under the same name.
Mr. Shumway was active in the civic and political life of Okanogan County. He was appointed a county commissioner in 1921 to fill and unexpired term, and was elected to two subsequent terms. He served as one of the original commissioners of the Okanogan County Public Utility District.
Mr. Shumway was a charter member of the Omak Commercial Club, Palestine Lodge 214 and Bethany Chapter 154 of Omak. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Bellingham and was a veteran of the Spanish-American War.
Surviving are his wife, Maude E. Shumway, Omak; six daughters, Mrs. Hazel Anderson, Mrs. Esther Kechley and Mrs. Virginia Duarte, all of Seattle; Mrs. Norma Hodges, Atlanta, Ga.; Mrs. Mildred Pentz and Mrs. helen Ringheim, Omak; one son, Stuart, Olympia; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie J. Thomas and Mrs. Stella Blythe, Bellingham; one brother, Ray Shumway, Lynden, Wash., 1 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
