FEMALE SCHOOL IN WAYNESBORO'.—The South River Advertiser announces "that Mrs. Annie T. Shands and Miss Fannie S. Smith, of Staunton, propose to open in Waynesboro' on the first Wednesday in September, 1881, a day school for the education of young ladies and girls. Mrs. Shands and Miss Smith are thoroughly educated and have had a large experience in teaching."

We hope this laudable enterprise will be crowned with abundant success. These ladies are the daughters of our citizen, Judge J. W. Green Smith, and we commend them to the favorable consideration of the good people of "Little Tammany," whose interests their enterprise will promote.

Death of William B. Shands, Esqr.—Mr. William D. Shands, of Harrisonburg, died at his on on Tuesday last of typhoid fever, after a short illness. He was about 30 years of age, robust, hale and hearty, and a man of splendid character, the stay and support of a widowed mother, and an affectionate husband and father. He was the son-in-law of Judge J. W. Green Smith of this city, and leaves a young wife and infant child. Mr. Shands was the law partner of John Paul, Esqr. The news of his death was a shock to his many friends of Staunton.

Walter N. Peale

Mr. Walter N. Peale, a traveling salesman, of Harrisonburg, Va., died at Johns Hopkins Hospital yesterday. Mr. Peale was thirty-three years old and was a native of Rockingham county, Va. He leaves a widow.

DEATH OF MRS. WALTER PEALE

Former Harrisonburg Lady Passes Away in Baltimore.

Word was receive her last evening from William Shands announcing the death yesterday in Baltimore of his mother, Mrs. Annie T. Peale. Mr. Shands' telegram stated this his mother's remains would be brought to Harrisonburg this afternoon and that the funeral would be held in this place tomorrow morning.

Mrs. Peale was a daughter of the late Judge J. William Greene Smith, of Rockingham county, and was born in Harrisonburg, her parents at the time of her birth occupying the property on South Main street that is now the home of Mr. John T. Harris.

Mrs. Peale was twice married. Her first husband was the late William Shands. Her second was Walter N. Peale, whose death occurred a number of years ago. Both Mr. Shands and Mr. Peale were members of prominent Rockingham families and both were well known residents of Harrisonburg.

Mrs. Peale was a woman of much culture, as well as of unusual musical talent, and for a number of years taught instrumental music in Harrisonburg with unusual success. Socially she was exceedingly popular. She was a communicant of the Presbyterian church. For several years prior to her death she made her home in Staunton. Recently she had been in failing health.

In addition to her son, William Shands, Mrs. Peale is survived by a sister, Mrs. J. Fred Effinger, of Staunton; a brother, Lucian Smith, of Chicago; and a half-brother, Herbert McKilden Smith, also of Staunton.
