Marjorie attended Bryant Jr. High, East High and the University of Utah graduating Phi Beta Kappa.
In 1936, Marjorie married Claude S. Smith. There are four children: Sidney Ann Poland, Bradley P. Smith, Terry S. Pia and Peter C. Smith.
Marjorie returned to the University of Utah in the 1950's and obtained her Masters in Library Science. She served as a school Librarian for 19 years in the Salt Lake School District. Following retirement, Marjorie audited classes at the University of Utah in world affairs and origins of cultures. She was affiliated with Pi Beta Phi Sorority, Junior League of Salt Lake City, Utah Library Association, U.E.A.S.L. Teachers Association and Girls Scout of America.
Marjorie loved the outdoors filling life with picnics, canyon breakfasts, skiing and hiking. She was an early pioneer in back country, skiing, traversing the Wasatch Mountain ridges from canyon to canyon before ski lifts. The Park City Mountains were her playground.
As her children, we can say she was an Awesome Mom. Mom led her family with a firm hand, understanding, incredible support and much love. She had a passion for cooking and enjoyed whipping up fantastic meals for our friends. Her keen interest in the younger generation resulted in lasting friendships. Saturday night dancing and a hot card game with her bridge buddies were always good times. Proud of her Scot-Irish heritage, in 1991 Mom ventured across the pond to London and Ireland. She visited museums, saw the Queen, sipped a Guinness in an Irish pub and kissed the Blarney Stone.
To her grandchildren, Patrick and Molly Poland, Sally Heugly, Shelley Medsker (J.) ,Braden Smith (Alison), Ashley Rasmussen, Stephanie and William Smith, and great grandchildren, Tyler, McKenna, Mark, Lewis, Wesley, Owen, Connor, Isabelle and Carson, mother leaves the legacy of her love of learning through books.
Marjorie is survived by her sister Betsy Berry, niece Corrinna Aragon, nephew George Peck and family friends, Holly Smith and Tony Pia. She is preceded in death by sister Dorothy Jackson. The family extends their appreciation to the staff members of St. Marks Hospital, Salt Lake Orthopedic Clinic and Woodland Park Care Center for the care and love they gave to our mother. Thank you Shaune.
In keeping with our mother's wish, interment was private. A summer celebration of her life will take place in Brighton.
We love you "Awesome Mom".
