Richard Strayer Dead; Retired Schools Chief

Richard E. Strayer, 63, former York resident and retired superintendent of Quakertown Schools in suburban Philadelphia, died Monday at his home in Quakertown two days after the junior high school in that community was named in his honor.

The son of Mrs. Eva Rich, York, and the late Eugene H. Strayer, he was a graduate of the old York County Academy and received his B.S. and M. Ed. degrees from Temple University.

He joined the Quakertown School system in 1939 as a physical education and science teacher. He was promoted to assistant principal in 1956, principal in 1958 and was named superintendent in 1962, which post he held until retiring in 1971.

Mr. Strayer is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jean Erlenmyer Strayer; three children, Mrs. Kenneth Conner II, Harrisburg; Richard Strayer, Slatington, Pa., and John Strayer, Quakertown; a sister, Mrs. M. Richard Jacobs, 777 Southern Road, and a brother, Edwin M. Strayer, 732 Greendale Road.

Funeral services were held Wednesday in Quakertown.
