Obituaries

Albany Vindicator, December 3, 18857693

Mr. A. Sutherland, a pioneer settler of Green County, died at his home in Monroe on Wednesday, Nov. 25 at the age of 63 years, 5 months and 10 days. Andrew A. Sutherland was born on June 10, 1822 in Madison County, New York and in 1836 while still a young lad moved with his parents to Illinois and then to Wisconsin in 1839. His father and mother were Justus and Maria Sutherland who died several years ago and who settled in the town of Sylvester where soon after Andrew bought forty acres of land adjoining the old homestead and from time to time added to it until he had a farm of 200 acres. In 1847 he married Esther J. Sutherland who survives him. He also leaves one son Oscar who resides on his father’s farm and one daughter Louise now the wife of George Ball whose home is in Tullahoma, Tennessee both of whom were present at his funeral. Mr. Sutherland was a kind and obliging husband and father, a good neighbor against whom no word of slander or disrespect was ever heard. By careful management, industry, and economy, he accumulated a large amount of property. His funeral service was held at the Gap Church Saturday and his body laid to rest in the cemetery at that place. A very excellent sermon was preached by Rev. Mr. Howe of Monroe while the large church was packed to its utmost capacity with relatives and friends of the deceased and old settlers of this county.
