Richmond Morning News, July 11, 19105389
"Through investigation I found:
"First—that the premised located at 137 School street (this site having been taken for grocery at least thirty years ago,) answered every requirement.
"Second—that the stock is one of the finest selections.
"Third—that the constantly increasing sales make this, in its district, an important enterprise.
"Fourth—that J. W. Towle & Co.'s site, has closely connected with it the name of that expert grocer, W. M. Hodgins, for a period of seventeen years.
"Fifth—that the present title was taken in April, 1909, and the firm members are: J. W. Towle and his nephew, Harry Penland, (not active in the business, and connected with the Atlas Engine Works of Indianapolis.)
"Mr. Towle, born in Richmond, is positively self-made and a first-class business man, is honest as the day is long; grows on acquaintance. Harry Penland is a young man of great promise. Mrs. Jennie M. Towle, and Mrs. Pearl Taylor (daughter) have given the business impetus. They are just what they appear to be, popular and pleasing.
"J. W. Towle, who strongly resembles Sir Walter Scott, loves nature and is a crack shot, and many a coon, squirrel, rabbit and quail must have regretted his prowess.
"Sixth—that if all grocery merchants were as J. W. Towle, there would never have been any need of Pure Food Laws.
