Obituaries

Joyce L. Cushman, 89, a former resident of the Forest Grove community, McMinnville and late of Newberg, died Tuesday morning, July 11, 2017 at the Providence Newberg Medical Center. JOYCE LUCILE CUSHMAN was born January 8, 1928 in McCloud, Oklahoma, the daughter of the late John Henry Wells and Gerty (Chilcote) Wells. She was raised and received her education in the communities of Mcloud, Oklahoma and Yakima, Washington until 1944 when she moved with her family to Oregon, settling in the community of Canby. Joyce was a graduate of the Canby High School Class of 1945. Upon her high school graduation, she attended Linfield College in McMinnville and later Marylhurst College in Portland. She was united in marriage to Meryl Duane Gors in 1946 in McMinnville, Oregon. Following their marriage they resided in the communities of Roseburg, Eugene, Pendleton, Seattle and then Portland, Oregon. They later divorced. Joyce was united in marriage to David Alan Cushman on September 13, 1963 in Forest Grove, Oregon. Following their marriage, they resided on a farm in the Gaston area, for twenty-six years. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, David Alan Cushman, on November 2, 1989, after celebrating over twenty-six years of marriage together. In 1997, she moved to the McMinnville community, where she resided for sixteen years, until 2013, when she moved to Willow Place in Newberg, where she had resided since. She had worked as a bookkeeper for the First National Bank in Hillsboro for several years, until 1972 when she worked as the office manager for the Maple Street Clinic in Forest Grove for ten years, until 1982. Joyce then became the office manager for Dr. Asbury and Dr. Richards in Hillsboro, where she worked for many years, until Dr. Sohriakoff acquired the practice. She was a member of the Unity Church, having attended their Portland and Wilsonville campuses. Among her special interests she had a special love for her family life and had volunteered for FEMA in the early 1990s having visited disaster areas in Guam and Arizona. She loved exercise, especially swimming, walking, running and cross-country skiing, and worked to keep active until the time of her passing attending morning exercises in her Newberg community. She also loved games of all kinds, especially Scrabble which she played with her close friends and family much of her life. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, John and Gerty Wells; her three sisters, Gladys Martin, Audrey Phillips and Vera Traudt; her three brothers, Oren "Doc" Wells, Verl Wells and S J "Jay" Wells, her husband David A. Cushman Sr. and her two sons, Matthew L. Gors in 1995 and Jeffrey D. Gors in 2015. Survivors include her two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert "Rob" Gors, of Newberg, Oregon, and David and Caitlin, of McMinnville, Oregon. Also surviving are her two grandchildren, Thomas S. Cushman, of Kirkland, Washington and William N. "Liam" Cushman, of McMinnville, Oregon and many nieces and nephews. The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions to the Disabled American Veterans, 8725 N.E. Sandy Blvd., Portland, Oregon 97220, in her memory.10737
