McCLUNG-COOK.

Mr. John McClung and Miss Gertrude Cook Married at Akron.

AKRON, IND., Oct. 22: A social event of more than ordinary interest occurred today, at the residence of Albert Cook on North Main Street.

About fifty guests assembled, relatives and most intimate friends of the families, and in their presence, at the warning of the midday hour, Mrs. Ernest Brown (nee Ruth McClung) of Indianapolis, seated at the piano rendered the sweet strains of melody, that caused "Love's echo" to vibrate in the heart of each one present, as Miss Maud Patterson, the maid of honor ushered, John L. McClung and Gertrude M. Cook to Hymen's Altar, where they met by Rev. W. F. Switzer, of Grace m. E. Church, Rochester. The clock struck twelve; the music ceased; in a beautiful and touching ceremony, according to the rites of the M. E. Church, Mr. Switzer pronounced the happy couple husband and wife.

Hearty congratulations followed, after which a sumptuous three course wedding dinner was served; correct in all its appointments, under the direction of Mrs. Will Brown, of Rochester. A feature of the repast which diverges from the ordinary, were the especially fine cakes, one bearing the inscription "Bride's Cake," sent from Chicago by Theo. Cook , the bride's brother, the other inscribed "Gertrude," by her cousin, Mrs. Repp, of Huntington.

Many useful and valuable presents were received bespeaking the esteem of the donors.

Mrs. McClung is the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albrt Cook, is well known and admired by many friends for her sunny disposition, gentle manners and business ability. For eight years she has been a trusted book keeper for business firms both in Akron and Rochester, thus being qualified as a help mate for her companion. They will reside for the present at the old McClung home.

The groom is widely known as both pharmacist and farmer. He is a graduate, class of '94, of Purdue University, and spent several years in the drug business. After the deat of his father, the late Jesse McClung, John went home to his mother to assist in the management of their large farm and has made quite a success as farmer as well as druggist.

A most lamentable death occurred at Mt. Zion this afternoon, when little Joseph [McCLUNG], the year old boy of Mr. & Mrs. John [L.] [and Gertrude M. COOK] McCLUNG, passed away as the result of poison accidentally taken.

The McClung residence had been infested with some mice and in order to rid the house of them, some poison had been procured and spread on a piece of bread and placed on a shelf in the pantry. Mrs. McClung did this just before starting away to spend the afternoon. The baby had just learned to creep the day before, and while the mother was getting ready to start the little fellow crept into the room, where the poison had been placed on a high shelf, and when she went to get him he had the piece of bread with the poison on it, and had eaten the poisoned butter nearly all off. Mice or rats had evidently dragged the piece of bread off the shelf and it fell to the floor, where baby found it.

Thinking the little fellow had not eaten enough to seriously affect him, the parents administered some domestic remedies quickly and thought to drive hurriedly to Dr. [Arthur E. (Dick)] STINSON's at Athens, where they were going for the afternoon, they saw their baby rapidly getting sick and telephoned for Dr. [M. O.] KING to come quickly in his auto. The doctor reached there in fifteen minutes after the call to him but convulsions had set in and he could not use his stomach pump and had to resort to other remedies. The baby seemed to improve this morning and was thought to be out of danger, but at noon he suddenly became worse and died two hours later in terrible agony.

The unfortunate baby was eleven and a half months old and a bright and lovable little fellow. He was an only child and the parents will have the profound sympathy of a very large circle of friends in their awful sorrow. [Sept 17, 1904 - Sep 2, 1905; bur Mt. Zion cem, Fulton co, Ind]
