The people of this city were surprised and saddened this morning by the announcement of the sudden death of J. J. McClung, who is well known as one of the pioneer residents of this county. The deceased has been afflicted with some organic heart trouble for the past several years, but, we learn, was enjoying usual health until the time of his death, which occurred at his home about two o'clock this morning.
Joseph Jesse McClung was born November 28, 1841, in Rush county, Indiana, near Knightstown, on Blue river, and died at hishome southeast of Rochester, April 22, 1898, aged 57 years, 4 months and 26 days.
He was married to Miss Sarah J. Davidson, at her home north of Lake Manitou, October 2, 1872, and by strick economy and adherence to fixed business principles succeeded in establishing a comfortable home and one of the model farms of the neighborhood.
To Mr. and Mrs. McClung were born two children, John, who occupies a trusted position at Keith's drug store, and Miss Ruth, who was one of the graduates of the Rochester High School last year.
The subject of this sketch has been a resident of Fulton county ever since he was seven years old, and has constantly been recognized as one of the best citizens, having served the Fulton County Agricultural Society as president and occupying other positions of trust. He was a member of Mt. Zion Presbyterian church and held a respected place among the brethren of the Odd Fellows' order of this city.
In his departure he leaves a wife, two children and two brothers to mourn his demise.
Rev. J. P. Roth will come on this evening train to conduct the services and we will give notice of the hour in tomorrow's paper.
Rochester Sentinel, April 29, 1898267
There was much surprise in town Friday, when the report was circulated that [Joseph] Jesse McCLUNG, the well known Mt. Zion farmer, had died suddenly during the night. He had been an invalid from organic heart disease for a year but had been better than usual for some time. Monday he was in town and yesterday he drove to Ben OLIVER's and other neighbors. He retired in the evening in apparent usual health and at 11 o'clock got up to open the door for a farm hand who had been out for the evening. Soon after he had a spell of coughing but then dropped to sleep as did also his wife. At 2 o'clock she was aroused by her husband's heavy breathing and upon arising she found that he was rapidly sinking and he died as gently as a child drops to sleep.
Joseph Jesse McCLUNG was born in Rush county, this state, 56 years and 6 months ago. He came to Fulton county when yet young and married Miss Sarah DAVIDSON. They located near Mt. Zion on a farm and being frugal and industrious they accumulated one of the finest farm homes in the county. The union was blessed by two children, John [McCLUNG], the druggist, and Ruth [McCLUNG], who graduated in the city schools last year.
Mr. McClung was one of the model citizens of Fulton county. He was a successful farmer, a splendid neighbor, a scholarly gentleman, and a progressive man in all of the avenues which lead to useful and ideal citizenship.
Rochester Sentinel, March 12, 1917267
John McCLUNG received a telegram Sunday evening announcing the death of his mother, Mrs. Sarah McCLUNG, 70, at the home of her daughter Mrs. Ernest BROWN in Indianapolis. Mrs. McCLUNG had been ill for more than a year, caused by heart trouble and other complications. She had been living in Rochester on Pontiac St., spending her time here and at Indianapolis. The body will be brought to Rochester for the funeral at the home of her son near Mt. Zion.
Mrs. McClung was the widow of Jesse McCLUNG, who died April 22, 1898. She was the daughter of Stephen and Kalherine DAVIDSON, and leaves three sisters and one brother, Mrs. Almeda STINSON, Mrs. Arch STINSON, Mrs. J. A. McCLUNG and John DAVIDSON of Elmsburg, Washington. The Davidson family were pioneer settlers in this county and 40 years ago were prominent. Mrs. McClung's father, Stephen Davidson, was state senator from this district for several terms.
