Among the young attorneys of the county who have gained distinction at an early age through their own efforts alone is Ernest T. Brown, county attorney, who has met success despite his strict adherence to what many men call a dreadful handicap—clean politics.
Mr. Brown was born at New Bethel in Franklin Township, Marion County, Oct. 20, 1881, and he has resided there continuously. He is the son of Henry J. and Flora S. Brown. The father is now serving his third term as trustee of the township. His mother was the daughter of Thomas Schooley, a prominent Republican politician in the early days of the county. Mr. Brown received his elementary training in the common schools of the county and when 12 year sold he entered the preparatory department of Butler College. When 14 years old he took a special course at the institution, graduating in 1899. He then went to Colorado and spent a year in a mining camp near Cripple Creek, undergoing many novel and thrilling experiences and finally returning home penniless. He entered the Indiana Law School in 1900, from which institution he was admitted to the bar and he entered the law office of former state Senator Levi P. Harlan, where he served a legal apprenticeship for some time.
He entered politics for the first time in 1904, the year of the bitter Taggart and anti-Taggart campaign in Marion County. In spite of his inexperience at the game and against great odds, Mr. Brown secured Taggart delegates from his township and his ability along political lines was at once recognized by party leaders, in the year of the same campaign he served as a member of the county executive committee.. He was a candidate for representative in the Legislature in 1906, but met defeat with the ticket. In 1910 he served as chairman of the Democratic county organization and in 1911 he was appointed county attorney, which office he has held since that time.
Mr. Brown has one brother, Raymond Brown of Atlanta, Ga., who is the manager of the branch plant of the Prest-O-Lite Company in that city. Mr. Brown was united in marriage some time ago to Miss Ruth McClung of Rochester, Ind.
