PONTIAC — Harold E. Stang, 91, of Pontiac died at 11:25 p.m. Friday (Nov. 18, 2011) at the ASTA Care Center of Pontiac.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, Pontiac, with the Rev. James O. Wolfe III officiating. A visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church, and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in South Side Cemetery, Pontiac, where his grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
Martin Funeral Home, Pontiac, is handling the arrangements. Memorials in Harold’s name may be left to the ASTA Care of Pontiac activities fund, Pontiac Jr. Baseball Association or the Boy Scouts of America.
Harold was born on March 5, 1920, in Pontiac, a son of Harry and Alverda Street Stang. He married Juanita Larkin on June 22, 1941, in St. Charles, Mo. She preceded him in death in February 1982.
He is survived by his three children, Peg (William) Raube, Rick (Anita) Stang and Cherry Slaton, all of Pontiac; 11 grandchildren, Bill (Gloria) Raube, Jerry (Linda) Raube, Harold Richard “Dick” Raube, Steve (Charlene) Raube, Kyle (Katy) Weber, Melissa Hanks, Kari (Todd) Henkel, Ryan (Andrea) Slaton, Jason (Kim) Slaton, Josh (Casey) Slaton and Nathan Slaton; 15 great-grandchildren, Eric, Mark and Dylan Raube, Chelsie Weber, Zachary Hanks, Megan Henkel, Heather (Cole) Oros, Erika and Kyle Birk, Troy Woodcock, Alex, Ryder and Paisley Slaton, and Jason and Haidyn McLamb; and one sister, Genevieve Stang of Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sisters, LaDonna Stang and Mary Rogers; one brother, Jim Stang; and one grandson, Michael Raube.
Mr. Stang was educated in Pontiac schools. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Pontiac. He worked as a mechanic for S.P. Bradley Motor Company in Pontiac for 45 years, keeping Studebakers and Mercury cars on the roads.
During World War II, he and his wife worked at the shipyards in Seneca. Harold was very active in the Boy Scouts of America, serving as Scoutmaster of Troop 71. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Citation, the highest recognition a volunteer can receive in scouting.
He was also very active in the Pontiac Junior Baseball Association and as manager of the Pontiac Chiefs, and was honored with his name being dedicated on a plaque at the Jaycee Park Press Box.
Harold was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan, always believing “Wait Till Next Year.” He was always seen wearing his Cubs gear. He had a love of music that continued his entire life, and was frequently heard serenading the residents of ASTA Care with tunes from the past. He never knew a stranger.
