MARRIAGE OF AN EDITOR.—Yesterday evening Mr. Leroy W. Allum, of the South Side Transcript put in an appearance at Des Moines, with that kind of a look in his eye that denoted some extraordinary occurrence. Close attention to business enables us to elicit the following information:
MARRIED.—At the residence of the bride's father, M. C. Israel, Mr. L. W. ALLUM to MISS ALICE G. ISRAEL, Rev. D. McIntire officiating.
That's the happy story and THE REGISTER part, most gladly performed, is to extend congratulations. This is can do with hearty grace. Mr. Allum is one of the band of young editors that give fine promise for future strength and reputation. The lady is the daughter of one of the solid merchants of Monroe, a belle in her own land and a matrimonial prize that our friend is justly proud to have won.
The bridal party will remain in Des Moines a few days, visiting Mrs. W. T. Garton, sister of Mr. Allum. That lady gives them a reception Thursday evening.

Following a lingering illness, Leroy W. Allum, 88, for 38 years a resident of Riverside, and former city editor of the Press, died this morning at the veterans hospital in Los Angeles. The body will be brought to Riverside for burial. H. M. Simons & Co. will handle the funeral arrangements.
In addition to the widow, Alice, Mr. Allum is survived by two sons, Dr. Leroy M. Allum of San Francisco; Frederick A. Allum of Arizona, and Mrs. Lawrence L. Hill of Hollywood.
For many years Mr. Allum had been identified with the activities of the Grand Army of the Republic, he having served over a long period as adjutant of Riverside post. He had the distinction of being the first assistant postmaster.
The family came to Iowa in 1853, and settled in Davenport.
In 1856 Leroy went to Hazel Dell academy, which he left October 2, 1862, at the age of 18, to enlist in Company C, 22nd Iowa, the same company in which his father, Thos. Allum, first enlisted. He went all through the war, and came back without a wound, although he faced danger and death countless times.
Mr. Allum was in the following battles: Port Gibson, Champion Hill, Black river and at the siege of Vicksburg.
It was his regiment, under Col. William M. Stone, afterwards governor of Iowa, that planted the flag upon the works at the battle of Vicksburg, when 28 men were killed in a few minutes, and some captured. They were obliged to withdraw, but they brought the colors back with them.
Vicksburg was taken on the following Fourth of July. Following this, the regiment was in the battle of Jackson, Miss., and was in New Orleans and Texas, and on the Red River campaign. THey were also in the Shenandoah valley, Fish Hill, Cedar Creek and Winchester.
In 1866, Mr. Allum, with his bunk and messmate, Thomas M. Rogers, started the Republican, a newspaper, at Newton, Ia., which he continued until 1878. While a resident of Monroe, Ia., Mr. Allum was appointed postmaster during the administration of President U. S. Grant.
Arriving in California in the early '80's, Mr. Allum settled in Oakland, where he published the Vidette, a Republican paper, daily and weekly, which he continued for nine years. Later he took up his residence with members of his family at San Diego, where he was assistant postmaster. From San Diego, the family moved to Riverside in 1893. While in San Diego he was a member of Heintzelman post, N. 33, G.A.R. He was a Knight Templar in the York rite, and 22nd degree in Scottish rite Masonry.
