In the death of Martin Clay Israel, which occurred at his ranch in th upper end of the valley on Thursday of last week, July 25, Escondido has been called upon to mourn the loss of another esteemed fellow citizen.
Mr. Israel was born in Gurnsey county, Ohio, December 10th, 1831. He removed from there to Blackhawk county, Iowa, with his parents, where he spent his boyhood days. He was married to Mary A. Horner April 13, 1854, who with her two daughters, Mrs. W. L. Ramsey, of Escondido, and Mrs. L. W. Allum, of Riverside, California, still survive him.
Mr. Israel for a great many years was actively engaged in the mercantile business at Monroe, Iowa, coming from there to California in 1883.
His funeral, which was largely attended, took place from the family residence Friday afternoon, July 26, and was conducted by Rev. C. G. Cressy, of the Baptist church, and his remains were lovingly laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery.
He embraced the Christian religion early in life and remained steadfast to the end.

Mrs. Mary Ann Israel, mother of Mrs. W. L. Ramey, died at 8:40 Friday evening at the home of her daughter after an illness of several weeks, resulting from old age and general debility. She was 82 years, six months and 25 days old. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Ramey and Mrs. L. W. Allum, of Riverside.
The funeral will be held at three o'clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. Louis A. Goddard, pastor of the Congregational church, will conduct the service at the Ramey home on Juniper street. Burial will take place at Oak Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Israel passed on to the higher life after a long and useful career. She was born January 5, 1834 in Indiana. When a young women she moved to Iowa and was there with her husband, Martin C. Israel, a pioneer when that state was being settled up. After many years of active and useful life in the middle west, Mr. and Mrs. Israel moved to California. That was 32 years ago and it was 18 years ago that they came to Escondido, bought a ranch and settled to spend their declining days.
About seven years ago Mr. Israel passed on. His body was laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery and the burial Sunday will take place beside his grave.
Mrs. Israel was a life-long member of the Baptist church and was a good and noble woman. She has gone to a just reward.
