Military Rites For John Butler Held On Friday

Funeral services for John William Butler, who died suddenly Feb. 12 were held Thursday afternoon, Feb. 16, at the Marcy chapel. Mr. Butler was 62 years old. The services were conducted by Rev. H. H. Utterback, pastor of the Christian church. Mrs. Howard Anderson was the organist.

Honorary pallbearers were Wallace McClelland, Wm. Beetison, George Willis, Omer Hatfield and Louis Detsauer.

Active pallbearers were Charles Marcus, Oscar Reece, Harvey Hoffman, Sam Rhoten, Robert Mason and Wm. Rogers. Burial at the Ashland cemetery was in charge of the American Legion Post No. 129 with military honors at the graveside.

John William Butler was born at Grant, Nebr. Feb. 22, 1887, the son of James and Ella Butler. When a small child his father died and some years later his mother married Silas A. Welden. They made their home at Yutan where John received his schooling. Their next home was on a farm near Ashland where he helped with the farm. He also spent some time in California as a lineman with the Edison Company, returning home in the winter to help his step-father.

He was brought up in the Baptist church, and was a man of honest principles, unselfishly devoting himself to helping others. He was especially fond of children and often remembered them with gifts. He was especially kind to his aged step-father and very tenderly assisted with his care and needs. His mother and sisters, Nellie and Grace, preceded him in death.

His survivors include his sister, Mrs. Hazel Kirchman of Pierce, his aged stepfather, three nephews and two nieces.

A veteran of World War I, Mr. Butler was among the first called and saw much active service.

Commander Jim Sikyta was in charge of the American Legion services at the grave with Harry Decker in command of the firing squad. Members of the firing squad were Lee Wagner, Elmer Iske, Ralph Farlow, Howard Henry, Leon Sherman and Don Seaback. The color guard included Paul Sherman and Wilbur Dutton.
