Stayton, Nov. 30—Fifteen hours on a dark island in the rain was the experience of two young Stayton lads who were lost Thanksgiving afternoon and night.
Jimmie and Bennie Carlon, 13 and 11 respectively, accompanied their step-father, George Wooden, on a hunting expedition. Wooden shot a duck and it fell on the island. Thinking it was on the other side of the Santiam river, Wooded sent the boys after the duck. Before they could start back darkness overtook the boys and they were frightened over the aspect of a strip of black water. Wooden, it is said, did not know that the boys were on the island though he has lived here for several years.
When the boys failed to show up Wooden gave the alarm, and searching parties with lanterns spent the entire night looking for the lost boys who, it was feared, might have been drowned. The two little fellows built a partial shelter from the rain and the noise of a nearby spillway prevented them hearing th shouts and calls of the searching party. Lanterns carried by the searchers were thought by the boys to be the lights of Stayton.
Early Friday morning Willard Goodman went across to the river and found the boys. Jimmie returned by means of an improvised raft while the other boy was brought back by Goodman. The boys were suffering from the exposure and fright but were otherwise uninjured and today were apparently little the worse for their experience. The mother was nearly frantic throughout the night.
