One by one the pioneers are crossing the river and the rank and file of early citizens is thinning out to such an extent that one is caused to stop and sadly reflect. The last one who has been summoned from earthly life is John Cochrane, who died at his residence, 258 West Barry street, at 5 o'clock this morning. Mr. Cochrane acted as one of the pall-bearers at the funeral of Mrs. Jesse L. Williams last Tuesday, at which time he contracted a bad cold resulting in grippe and subsequent brain trouble. He was delirious in his last hours.
John Cochrane was about 83 years old. He was born in Scotland and immigrated to America when a young man. He came to Fort Wayne in 1836 and started the first carpenter shop and planing mill in the town, upon the site now occupied by the Haffuer building, at the southwest corner of Barry and Harrison streets. Soon afterward the planing mill business of Col. James Humphrey and Col. O. D. Hurd was started, and a few years later Mr. Hurd's interest was purchased by Mr. Cochrane. From that time until the death of Colonel Humphrey, a few years ago, this firm existed, the mills being located at the same spot during all those years. The plant is now operated by Diethers. The planing mills of Cochrane & Humphrey were well known all over northern Indiana. The deceased was naturally a retiring gentleman, but this did not prevent his friends from from selecting him as a representative of public affairs, among which positions was that of councilman. Mr. Cochrane was a loyal citizen, a generous man, and a true friend. He leaves three children, as follows: Margaret, who was principal in the public schools; Jennie and Mrs. Elizabeth Sweet.
