Frank Coe, 73, Dies; Was First IMF Director

PEKING (UPI) — Frank Coe, an American economist who came to China after he was discredited during the McCarthy ear in the 1950s, has died at age 73, the official Xinhua news agency said Wednesday.

Calling him a "close friend of the Chinese people," the agency said Coe died of a pulmonary embolism in a Peking hospital Tuesday.

Coe was an adviser to the U.S. Treasury and other government agencies in the 1930s and 1940s, joined the government during World War II and was named the first executive director of the International Monetary Fund in 1946.

He resigned in 1953, after being called to testify before congressional committees and grand juries and eventually refusing to testify about his past, pleading the Fifth Amendment.

Coe came to China in 1958 and served as a special adviser to the Institute of Economics and the Administrative Commission on Import and export affairs.

During his years in China, Coe also helped in the English translation of the selected works of Mao Tse-tung.

Xinhua said Coe was visited during his illness by numerous senior officials, including Vice Premier Ji Pengfei.

In New York, family members said Coe was operated on for lung cancer last year, after which he received radiation and chemotherapy.

Born in Richmond, Va., Coe studied at the University of Chicago and Johns Hopkins University, specializing in international economics. He taught at the University of Toronto from 1934 to 1939.

He leaves his wife, Ruth Evans, who was with him in Peking, and four children, two of them from a previous marriage.
