Miss Betty Evans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold B. Evans, 2237 Fox ave., and Pfc. Leonard J. Ganser, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest M. Ganser, 510 Elmside blvd., were married May 12 at 9 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament church, by the Rev. Fr. Mulvey.

Given in marriage by her father, Miss Evans' only attendant was Corp. Ruth A. Evans of the WAC, stationed at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. Corp. Hubert Ganser of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., was the best man.

A wedding breakfast and reception were held at the home of the bride's parents. Assisting were Miss Bernice Conohan, Mrs. Leslie Doyle, Mrs. Robert Conohan, Mrs. Thomas Bourke, Miss Kathryn Parkinson, and Mrs. Judson Evans.

Pfc. Ganser and his bride will make their home at the Langlois apartments, 211 N. Randal ave. The bridegroom is a third year medical student at the University of Wisconsin.

Ganser, Dr. Leonard James

MADISON - Leonard James Ganser, MD, age 77 died on Friday, June 20, 1997, at University Hospital as the result of injuries due to a fall. He was born on October 7, 1919, in Lodi, Wisconsin, the son of Ernest and Clara Ganser. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1946. He completed his psychiatric residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1953 and was a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service from 1947 to 1952. Dr. Ganser served the State of Wisconsin in mental health and human services for over 30 years from 1953 to 1985. He was Superintendent of the Wisconsin Diagnostic Center, 1955-1960; Administrator of the Division of Mental Hygiene (Community Services), 1960-1979; and Chief of Clinical Research and Training for the Division 1979-1985. He was Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, 1972 to the present. Dr. Ganser was a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, American Psychiatric Associate (Life Fellow), Wisconsin Psychiatric Association (President 1959-1960), State Medical Society of Wisconsin, Dane County Medical Society, American College of Psychiatrists (Charter Fellow) and National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (President 1967-1969). He served on the Board of Directors of De Paul Rehabilitation Hospital, Milwaukee. Dr. Ganser influenced many national and state programs in the fields of alcohol and drug abuse, mental health, developmental disabilities and social services. He was a member of the Wisconsin Council on Developmental Disabilities (Chairman 1982-84). He was a consultant to the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Health Care Financing Administration. Dr. Ganser was honored by two past Wisconsin Governors for outstanding contributions in the development of community mental programs and services for persons with developmental disabilities. Dr. Ganser was an active member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish serving on the Parish Council and as a commentator and usher. He was a member of Madison Sierra Club and Madison Council 4527 Knights of Columbus. Len is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty (Evans); two daughters, Judy, of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Nancy (Sid) Nichols of Madison; three sons, Dave (Susan) of Atlanta, Georgia, Jim of St. Louis, Missouri , and John of Janesville, Wisconsin; three grandchildren, Carly, Lindsay and Tyler Nichols; a brother, Hugh (Georgiann) of Lodi; and many other relatives. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church with Father Kenneth Fiedler presiding. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.
