WEST LEBANON — J Hall Crone, 93, of West Lebanon, Punta Gorda, Fla., and West Lafayette, died Aug. 11, 2011, at Westminster Village in West Lafayette, where he had lived several years.
He was born May 25, 1918, to John B. and Irene Hall Crone of West Lebanon. Following graduation from West Lebanon High School, he farmed until Dec. 8, 1941, when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps immediately following the attack upon Pearl Harbor. Mr. Crone served in the Pacific, achieved the rank of master sergeant and was a line chief for the 312th Bomb Group.
On Sept. 3, 1942, he married Iva Brown. Following World War II, the couple made their home on the family farm near West Lebanon, until later years when they divided their time between Fort Myers Beach, Fla., and the farm. Mrs. Crone died in 1987.
Mr. Crone was a board member and deacon of the Federated Church, West Lebanon, served on the school board, was president of the Judyville PTO and was recognized for his conservation efforts by receipt of the Cal Hampton Award for Conservation. His efforts with strip farming and erosion control also were recognized by articles in Successful Farmer and Farm Journal. He loved fishing and enjoyed his family.
In 1989, he married Thira Wilson, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Nanci Ross of Rising Sun, Julie Matthews (husband: Ken) of Woodland Park, Colo., and Suzanna Senesac (husband: Lynn) of Lafayette; and a brother, Boyd Crone (wife: Virginia) of Tab.
In addition, he is survived by grandchildren Anne (Brian) Skinner, Sanford, Fla.; Katherine Matthews (Todd Riddle) of Denver; Jake Alexander (fiancee, Jill Gerwe), Rising Sun; Aaron Senesac, West Lebanon; Susan (Stephen) Mitchell, Markle; and Jay Senesac, Lafayette; great-grandchild, Matthew Skinner, Sanford, Fla.; and nephews and a niece. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Iva Crone; and sister and brother-in-law Anna Jean and Park Hunter. He valued honesty and integrity and will be greatly missed by his family.
Visitation will be at Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport on Sunday Aug. 28, 2011, from 2 p.m. until time of the memorial service at 5 p.m. with Pastor Dan Young officiating.Inurnment at West Lebanon Cemetery with full military honors.
