Phillips B. Marsden Jr., decorated WWII vet

Phillips Brooks Marsden Jr., a World War II veteran who received two Bronze Stars for his heroism in combat, died Saturday at The Meadows in North Andover. He was 80 and had Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases.

"He valued people's lives," said his son David, of Portland, Maine.

One of the Bronze Stars Mr. Marsden received was awarded because he volunteered to carry ammunition — crawling on his stomach — to his comrades in battle, his son said. Mr. Marsden was born in Worcester in 1923, but grew up in Maplewood, N.J. After graduating from high school, he studied engineering and business at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.

He left college in 1945 and enlisted in the Army. The same year, he married Marjorie (Dean) and was sent to Europe for military service.

After the war, Mr. Marsden returned to Lehigh University and completed his studies. He and his family moved to Andover in the early 1950s.

Several years later, Mr. Marsden began working at Lawrence Pump and Engine Co. as a draftsman. He went back to school and earned a master's degree in business administration in 1975 from Harvard University.

Mr. Marsden also worked in sales and management at Lawrence Pump and Engine Co., and served as vice president of Diethelm and Keller of Zurich, Switzerland. He retired in the early 1980s, but continued for several more years as a consultant to the company.

Active in the town of Andover, Mr. Marsden served as an assessor and member of the finance committee for many years.

"He was a community and civic type of guy," said his son.

Church was also a big part of Mr. Marsden's life, his son said. He was a member of Christ Church in Andover and Old North Church in Boston. In addition to teaching Sunday School and confirmation classes, he served as a eucharistic minister.

Mr. Marsden had an "old-school" style about him, his son said.

"He was a dapper dresser. He always wore cufflinks," said his son. "He wasn't afraid to wear a bright flower tie in the summer, just for fun."

In addition to his son and wife, Mr. Marsden leaves another son, Phillips Brooks III of Atlanta; two daughters, Lynn Marsden-Atlass of Philadelphia, and Daphne Marsden-Kelley of Westford; a sister, Marilyn Birchall of East Orleans; and nine grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held today at 10:30 a.m. in Christ Church in Andover. Burial will be private.
