The wedding of Miss Ellen Louisa Johnson, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Asa Miller Johnson, 490 Holly avenue, St. Paul, to Edwin Shedd Elwell, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Shedd Elwell, 5127 Belmont avenue S., Minneapolis, took place Saturday evening at the Church of St. John's the Evangelist in St. Paul. Lighted candles lined the aisle of the church which was decorated in green and white.
The bride wore an ivory satin dress with an old lace Juliet cap and veil. She carried a bouquet of stephanotis and white orchids.
The maid of honor, Miss Dorothy Oerting of St. Paul, cousin of the bride, and the bridesmaids, Misses Laura Alice Chatterton, Miss Alice Phelps and Mrs. Robert B. Mirick of Minneapolis wore identical dresses in coral net with velvet bows and coral velvet hats. They carried miniature gladioli and Johanna Hill roses.
Robert B. Mirick, was best man, and ushers were William Huenekens, Robert Weigle, Robert Williams, Herbert Hughes of Minneapolis and James Massie of Hastings on the Hudson.
The reception was held at the University club of St. Paul. After a short wedding trip, Mr. and Mrs. Elwell, Jr., will live at 2024 Clinton Avenue, Minneapolis.

Elwell - Ellen Louisa Johnson Elwell, 85, of Minneapolis, died peacefully on March 10, 2004. She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Edwin; two daughters, Eleanor (Robert Zeff) and Priscilla (Richard Miller); and one son, Edwin (Ted) III (Joan); six grandchildren, Daniel, Andrew (Maria), Naomi and Priscilla Zeff; Lita (Mike Lemieux) and Rachel Elwell; one great grandson, Nicolas Zeff and many friends and relatives. Ellen was born on August 30, 1918 during the influenza epidemic. Her father, Asa Miller Johnson, was a general practitioner who received his Medical Degree from the University of Minnesota in 1896 when Cyrus Northrop was its president and John Pillsbury was Governor of Minnesota. As a boy, Asa witnessed the Jesse James raid on the Bank of Northfield. Her mother, Hazel Perry Johnson, was a nurse from Detroit Lakes. Ellen attended the St. Paul Academy/Summit School, graduating in 1936, and then graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1940. She was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. Before her marriage, she studied another year to become a medical artist. Ellen was a full time Homemaker and a dedicated Community Volunteer. She was a wonderful role model for her children. One of her proudest achievements was helping to found and build, and then to serve on the Board of Trustees of the Minneapolis Children's Hospital for 30 years. She also worked with Lutheran Social Services helping "teen-aged" mothers learn life skills and nutrition, and she was a member of the Minneapolis Junior League and the Minikahda Club. Ellen was very proud of her Minnesota heritage, and her spirit and enthusiasm will be missed by her family and friends. There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate Ellen's life at the Lakewood Cemetery Chapel, 3600 Hennepin Avenue at 2:00 PM, March 20, 2004. Elwell, Edwin Shedd Jr., Of Minneapolis, died peacefully on February 22, 2008. His wife, Ellen, preceded him in death. He is survived by two daughters, Eleanor (Robert Zeff) and Priscilla (Richard Miller); and one son, Edwin "Ted" III (Joan Budne); six grandchildren, Daniel, Andrew (Maria), Naomi (Craig Cohen) and Priscilla Zeff; Lita (Mike Lemieux) and Rachel Elwell; two great-grandsons, Nicolas and Alexander Zeff; his caretaker, Janet Kruse and two exchange students, Margaret Thomas and Alvaro Mello. Edwin "Shedd" was born in Minneapolis on July 10, 1916 during the great white shark attack on the East Coast. Shedd's grandfather, James Tallmadge Elwell was a State Senator and author of the Elwell Law concerning improvements and assessment of property in Minneapolis. His father, Edwin Shedd Elwell, a lawyer and the founder of the Northland Milk and Ice Cream Company, and his mother, Veda Hope Loomis, a master gardener, both graduated from the University of Minnesota. Shedd grew up in Minneapolis. He graduated from The Blake School in 1935, and Harvard in 1939 majoring in Latin American History. He married Ellen Johnson in August 1941 and entered Harvard Business School. With the outbreak of World War II, he returned to Minnesota to enlist in the Army. In 1945, he served with the 77th Infantry Division (the Statue of Liberty Division) in the Army of Occupation in Japan. After several years with artillery and communications, he ultimately reached the rank of Captain. Finishing the service, he joined the Northland Milk Company becoming President before he was forty and joining the Young President's Organization (YPO). His three children all graduated from Northrop and Blake schools. He strongly supported the education of his children and later his grandchildren. Shedd participated in many civic activities, including Rotary Club and the Ham and Eggs Club, and he enjoyed sports and music events. He helped start the boys' basketball team at Blake in 1935 and has continued to support The Blake Schools. He enjoyed the symphony and hunting with his dogs and supported Ducks Unlimited and the Nature Conservancy. For many years he had season tickets to the U. of M. football games and to the Minnesota Vikings. He was a longtime member of the Minikahda Club in Minneapolis, and the Encampment Forest Association near Two Harbors, Minnesota. He continued his love of history throughout his life, visiting most Civil War battlefields and was a member of the Twin Cities Civil War Round Table. He and Ellen traveled extensively, including trips to Timbuktu and also to China, where he witnessed the Beijing Tieneman Square Uprising in 1989. His family and friends will miss his wry humor, his amazing memory, his wonderful kindness and gentle character.
