Visiting Grandma Finds Experience Enriching

Helen Groebner, of Lombard, volunteers at Stepping Stones Day Care Center in Glen Ellyn, where she serves as a visiting grandma to the children. She also is the "talking books" liaison between the residents of Lexington Square and the Helen Plum Library. Groebner, 69, has two children, Barbara and Mary.

Volunteer Experience.

I have no grandchildren of my own, so I thoroughly enjoy the little children I meet at Stepping Stones. it is a way for me to experience these young ones without the heavy responsibility ordinarily involved. In the talking books program, I help to provide access to books for those whose horizons are limited by visual or physical handicaps. The program is great, such a joy for the participants.

Volunteer Philosophy.

I live in a retirement home but don't intend to molder away. I want to realize my potential and help others to stay in life and keep alive mentally and to preserve what is physically left. My experiences with the children give me an endearing way to enrich my life, and I hope that I can enrich theirs. It takes so little but gives so much in return.

Important Issue.

These little children need seniors in their lives and vice versa. The talking books program keeps minds alive and entertains at no cost to people who my be on fixed incomes.

Current Book.

The classics: "Jane Eyre," "Wuthering Heights," "Tale of Two Cities" and "Ben Hur." We have a book group and that was our recent project. I am currently reading Morris West's "Lazarus."

Perfect Dat.

At least one meeting a day. I am involved in Bible study, conversation group, library duty, rosary, chorus, proofreading our newsletters, and the book group. I also dinner with special, stimulating people. time for reading books (my personal vice), doing puzzles and logic problems, gentle walks with friends and keeping up to date with my daughters and their "children" (two cats, two kittens and a bird).
