'Chick' Henn, 88; pediatrician on South Shore for 35 years

DR. S.C. "CHICK" Henn, 88, a past president of the Chicago Pediatric Society, was a South Shore pediatrician for 35 years. He also was chief of pediatrics at the former St. Luke's Hospital, 14th Street and Michigan Avenue.

Services will be private for Dr. Henn, of Schaumburg. He died Monday in Humana Hospital-Hoffman Estates.

Dr. Henn, who had offices at 71st Street and South Shore Drive for 35 years, also was on the staff of Children's Memorial Hospital and Rush Presbyterian Hospital, as well as St. Luke's. He graduated in 1921 from Rush Medical School.

"He became a pediatrician because he liked kids," said his son, Robert. "He had been ill often as a child and had received such rotten care that he figured there had to be a better way. He loved taking care of kids and he made house calls. He was very concerned with childhood diseases."

DR. HENN WAS president of the Chicago Pediatric Society in 1956 and 1957.

After retiring as a pediatrician in 1957, he became medical director of the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, a position he held for 17 years. He worked with athletic teams and was presented with an honorary letterman's award.

"He acquired the nickname 'Chick' in high school," he son said. "It was a term of endearment and of course came from his last name. Years later, children who were his patients often called him, 'Uncle Chick.'"

As a young man in 1912, he worked in a reforestation program begun by President Theodore Roosevelt. He said it was the first such program in the country.

Besides his son, Dr. Henn's survivors include his wife, Helen; 2 daughters, Helen Groebner and Dorothy Deist; 11 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
