Orville Craig Hall, 84

Bevil Oaks' first mayor, O.C. Hall, dies at 84

Orville Craig Hall, the first mayor of Bevil Oaks who led the community for 18 years, died this week at age 84.

Friends said that his laid-back attitude meshed well with the low-key community he served.

Known mostly as O.C., the World War II veteran took office in Bevil Oaks in 1963 and stayed in office until 1981. A longtime rice farmer, he was involved in the Southeast Texas Regional Planning Commission. He was also an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church of Beaumont.

Jim Whitmeyer, who followed Hall as mayor, said Saturday that he was "a fellow that if he started out to do something he stayed with it."

The 74-year-old print shop owner said Hall's service with the planning commission was good for Bevil Oaks, because if he saw something that would benefit his community, "he'd jump on it in a hurry."

Whitmeyer described him as "a fine fellow. Just exactly the type we needed."

Hall is survived by his wife Dolores Wilson Hall and two children. A gathering for family and friends will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church in Beaumont from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. today. Funeral services begin at 3 p.m.
