Retired Engineer, Wendell Hall, Dies

Wendell G. Hall, a retired prominent civil engineer with the Bureau of Land Management, died here Tuesday afternoon at the age of 67.

Hall's survey work was widely known among civil engineers throughout the Southwest and Alaska.

Hall was born in Santa Fe in 1906 while New Mexico was still a territory. He graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1929.

Hall spent his entire 40 year career with BLM, a division of the Department of the Interior, beginning in 1921. He received a permanent appointment in 1930 with the former General Land Office as a transition.

After being awarded by bronze and silver medals for meritorious service, Hall retired in 1965 as chief of the division of engineers.

Hall is featured in the current issue of New Mexico Professional Engineer for his work in setting up surveying systems for vast tracts of Alaska.

After being transferred to the Alaskan Territory to begin initial surveying work, Hall developed a method of electronic distance measuring especially to the expansive and difficult terrain of Alaska.

Following retirement Hall spent much of his time writing about his profession, including a history of New Mexico surveying since the 1900s.

His father, Wendell V. Hall, had been a deputy surveyor of public lands for the Interior Department's General Land Office.

Funeral services were to be held today at the First Presbyterian Church at 2:30 p.m., followed by a graveside ceremony at the national cemetery at 3 p.m.

A memorial fund has been established in his name to aid the St. Vincent Hospital building fund.
