Charles N. Harlowe

Funeral services for Charles N. Harlowe of 115 West Sixteenth street, widely known among members of the theatrical profession as a druggist, were held last night at the First Presbyterian Church, at Fifth avenue and Twelfth street. Mr. Harlowe had been ill since last January and had been a patient at the Medical Center, where he died Monday, for the last six weeks. He was 62 years old.

Mr. Harlow was born in Hastings, Mich., November 22, 1872. After being graduated from the Buffalo College of Pharmacy he came to New York, where for several years he was the manager of the Riker, Hegemon, Bolton chain of drug stores in Brookly. In 1917 Mr. Harlowe and L. A. Luther bought the F. K. Janes store at the northeast corner of Forty-sixth street and Broadway and continued to operate it until 1926, when their lease expired. Mr. Harlowe then moved to 55 Fifth avenue, where he was in the drug business at the time of his death.

Harlowe & Luther's drug store at Forty-sixth street was to the world of the theater what the "corner drug store" is to the small town. In the heart of the theatrical district, it was the meeting place for the profession and was extensively patronized by stage performers. The names of practically every theatrical star of the last two generations were on the prescription books. Among his famous patrons were John, Lionel and Ethel Barrymore, John Drew, Henry Miller, Edmund Breese and Rudolph Valentino.

Mr. Harlowe was a member of Equality Lodge, 940, F. & A. M.; Ivy Chapter, 238, Royal Arch Masons; Manhattan Commandery, Knights Templar; the Drug Institute of America, the Druggists and Chemical Square Club and the Leewood Golf Club. He is survived by his widow, the former Miss Maude Thurber, of Olean, N. Y., and a son, John T. Harlowe, a sophomore at Colgate University. Burial will be at Olean today.

With the expiration of the lease on that property, Mr. Harlowe moved to the fashionable residential center on lower Fifth Avenue. At the time of his death, he had operated a shop at N. 55, Fifth Avenue, which attracted a mixed clientele of society residents and students of New York University nearby.
