LaGrange Girl To Wed Army Officer

Announcement of the approaching marriage of Miss Mary Catherine Antonides of LaGrange and First Lt. Lester J. Hess of St. Marys, Ohio, was made Friday evening when Miss Antonides entertained 2 tables of bridge at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otis B. Antonides at LaGrange.

Each guest was given a corsage to which announcement of approaching marriage were attached. No definite date has been set for the wedding, although it will take place within the next month.

Miss Antonides attended the University of Wyoming where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority, Phi Gamma Nu, an honorary commerce sorority, and Epsilon Sigma Alpha, a business girls' sorority of Casper, Wyo. She also is a member of the Kappa Kappa Kappa chapter of LaGrange.

Lt. Hess, son of MR. and Mrs. Lester H. Hess, of St. Marys, attended Purdue university 3 years before entering the air force. He arrived at the home of his parents Wednesday night, after a year in England, where he was a ground crew engineering officer with the Eighth Air force. He is on a 30-day leave, after which he will take B-29 training.

Lester J. Hess, 62, 403 E. Congress St., Sturgis, died 8:05 p.m. May 25, 1982 in Sturgis Hospital. He had been in failing health for eight years.

He was born in St. Mary's, Ohio and was a Sturgis resident for 33 years, coming from LaCrosse, Wis.

He was married to Mary Catherine Antonides on July 28, 1945 in LaGrange, Ind.

He was graduated from St. Mary's (Ohio) High School and in 194x, was graduated from the Purdue University School of Engineering. He was a registered professional engineer with the state of Michigan.

He was a mechanical engineer for Harter Corp. for 16 years. He was formerly employed with Wade Electric Products for 16 years.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

He was a member of the Meridian Sun Lodge 49 F&AM and the Sturgis Elks Lodge 1381. He was also very active and served on the board of directors of Junior Achievement for several years.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the maintenance engineers as a captain in the Air Force.

Surviving are his wife; three sons, Craig Hess, Paw Paw, Randy Hess, Los Gatos, Calif., and Brad HESS, Toledo, Ohio; four grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Elmer (Leora) Youngs, St. Marys, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hess was born Dec. 28, 1919, son of Lester H. and Estella B. (Orphal) Hess.

Friends may call at the Foglesong Funeral Home where the family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Religious services will be held at the funeral home 2 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Dr. Loren M. Scribner, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery. If desired, memorials may be directed to the American Lung Association of Michigan or the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Mary C. "Kay" Hess

Sturgis, Mich.

Mary Catharine “Kay” Hess, age 87, of Sturgis, passed away Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.

She was born Aug. 20, 1922, in LaGrange, Ind., a daughter of the late Otis B. and Mura (Gettings) Antonides.

Mary graduated from LaGrange High School with the class of 1940 and attended the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyo., where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority.

She had been a resident of Sturgis since 1949, previously living in LaGrange, Colorado Springs, Colo., Lafayette, Ind., and LaCrosse, Wis.

On July 29, 1945, she married Lester J. Hess in LaGrange. He preceded her in death May 25, 1982.

She was a homemaker and very active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis. She enjoyed volunteering with the Red Cross bloodmobile, the church bazaars, the nursery guild, and also enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are three sons, Craig (Lynn) Hess of Paw Paw, Randy Hess of Carson City, Nev., and Brad (Jackie) Hess of Toledo, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Pamela (Ronald) St. Clair, Todd (Tonya) Hess, Matthew (Tiffany) Hess, Nicholas Hess and fiancé Erinn Cott, Kyle Hess, Christopher Hess and Michael Hess; six great-grandchildren, Jordan, Sydney and McKenna St. Clair, and Dalton, Quinn and Samantha Hess; a sister-in-law, Jean Youngs; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Robert and Jean Antonides.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday and 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Rosenberg Chapel, Sturgis.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Mary “Kay” Hess will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Michael Wicks officiating.

Interment and graveside services will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, American Red Cross, or to Junior Achievement. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
