Max Hickman

GREELEY — Max D. Hickman, 77, formerly of Greeley, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Ord Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Douglas Grove Cemetery at Comstock. The Greeley and Comstock American Legion will conduct military rites.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the Grand Island Veterans Affairs gift store or the Greeley and Comstock volunteer fire departments.

Mr. Hickman was born on June 15, 1922, at Arcadia to Robert Oakley and Nina N. (Hogue) Hickman. He was raised and attended school in the Arcadia area. He graduated from Westerville High School in 1940.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1942.

He married Miriam J. Kauff on July 13, 1944, in Columbus, Ohio.

Mr. Hickman was wounded in the Pacific battle to recapture Manila in 1944. After he was hospitalized for a year, he and his wife moved to Bentonville, Ark. He attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. The Hickmans returned to Nebraska and bought a farm at Comstock in 1951.

After the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation purchased the farm for the Arcadia Diversion Dam/Sherman Reservoir project, Mr. Hickman began work for the U.S. Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. He worked in field operations and became executive director of the Greeley County ASCS office. He retired in 1984.

Mr. Hickman was a member of the Elks, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Greeley Service Club, Comstock Fire Department, National Association of County Office Employees, American Association of Retired Persons and Nebraska Democratic Party Central Planning Committee. He was a past mayor of Greeley.

Survivors include a son, M. Douglas Hickman Jr. of Arcadia; four daughters, Miriam A. McFadden of Sharps Chapel, Tenn., Karen S. (Mrs. Jim) Day and Dawn E. (Mrs. Michael L.) Whitlow, both of Lincoln, and Bonita M. (Mrs. Rodney) Hickman-Kamarad of Comstock; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert N. Hickman of Overton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, an infant son, two sisters and a brother.10661
