WHEELER-HOUSTON WEDDING HELD AT BURLINGTON

Burlington — Westminster Community church was the setting Sunday at 8 p. m. for the marriage of Wanda Wheeler, daughter of Mrs. Floyd E. Wheeler, r2902 Market, and Clifford R. Houston, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Houston of Denmark. Rev. T. E. Dillow officiated at an altar setting of white gladioli and mums in baskets, candelabra and palms.

Nuptial music was given by Mrs. Audrey Chmelar, vocalist of Washington, and Sally Kester, organist of West Burlington.

In the wedding party were Lila Wakefield, St. Joseph, Mo., maid of honor; Harold Houston, Denmark, best man; Mrs. Jay Lane and Marilyn Wheeler, sisters of the bride, bridesmaids; Kenneth Houston, St. Louis, and Jack Wheeler, ushers.

The bridal gown of Chantilly lace and tulle over satin was fashioned with a cathedral train. The illusion veil was attached to a pearlized crown. The bride carried a cascade of white mums.

For traveling on the honeymoon through New Mexico the bride wore a rose suit with white accessories. Her corsage was of white mums.

Mr. Houston and his bride will be at home at 614 South 12th, Sept. 1. The bride was graduated from Burlington college the past spring and will teach at Perkins school this fall. Mr. Houston, who attended Iowa Wesleyan college, will be music instructor at Denmark. He formerly taught in the Sperry schools.

Clifford Russell Houston, 83, of Burlington died at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, at Burlington Care Center. Born Sept. 6, 1927, in Denmark, he was the son of Clyde and Elsie Sheperd Houston. On Aug. 14, 1954, he married Wanda Wheeler in Burlington. Mr. Houston worked as warehouse director of the home and garden division of Chevron Corporation. He taught music at Mundt Piano and Organ and at Denmark, Sperry and Columbus Junction schools, and was choir director at Westminster Community Church. He graduated from Denmark Academy and earned a bachelor's degree in music at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant. He served in the Army. He was of the Presbyterian faith. He enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals, reading biographies, listening to classical music on the radio, and chauffeuring the family. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Russell Houston and Bradley Houston, both of Burlington, and Matthew Houston of Davenport; one brother, Harold Houston of Denmark; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. No visitation is planned. The body has been cremated. The memorial service for Mr. Houston will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Prugh's Chapel in Burlington with the Rev. Dean Graber officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at a later date. A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice House.
