Harold Hayes "Sam" Houston, 81, of Denmark died at 5:07 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, at Burlington Care Center. Born Nov. 19, 1928, in Denmark, he was the son of Clyde and Elsie Sheperd Houston. On April 3, 1955, he married Elizabeth "Betty" Eckmeier in Donnellson. Mr. Houston worked as a correctional officer. He worked 17 years at Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison and 20 years at Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility. He also enjoyed farming. He graduated from Denmark Academy in 1946. He served in the Army from 1950 to 1952 in Germany during the Korean War. He was a member of Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ. He was a Chicago Cubs fan. He enjoyed watching baseball, quoting sports trivia and talking about his time in Germany. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kevin Houston of Ankeny and Michael Houston of Chicago; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, his parents and three brothers. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Barr Memorial Chapel in Fort Madison where the family will receive friends. The funeral for Mr. Houston will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Barr Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Chad Savage officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Denmark Cemetery. Memorials have been established for Denmark Congregational United Church of Christ and Great River Hospice in West Burlington.
