Deer Hide Trunk

One of the oldest and most interesting items which the club has definitely secured is a small trunk covered with deerskin, which has been in Iowa 101 years. It was brought here by Ira Houston when he came west with his family in 1837 from Lyndborough, N. G. It is now the property of Mrs. Asa Houston of Denmark, Ia.

A companion piece from the collection of Mrs. Houston is a clock reel. This was used for winding yarn from the spinning wheel into skeins, being constructed so that it would click or strike whenever enough yarn had been wound for a skein. It was used by Royena Houston Leverett, daughter of Ira Houston and mother of the donor.
