YOUTH IS KILLED, ANOTHER INJURED AS CARS COLLIDE

Hugh Johnson of Near Carthage Dies in Crash—Winfred Souther, Jasper, in Hospital.

GIRL ALSO IS HURT

Miss Paulette Bayless, Carthage, Receives Minor Cuts as Two Automobiles Sideswipe.

Carthage, Mo., March 14.—Hugh Johnson, 24 years old, of near Carthage, was killed, and Winfred Southern, 23 years old, of Jasper, was critically injured, when two motor cars collided at 8 o'clock tonight eight miles east of here on highway No. 68.

Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Johnson, residing twelve miles east of Carthage, near the Center Point church, and well-known farmers, was thrown from a motor car and suffered a broken neck and internal hemorrhages.

Southern, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Southern, was taken to the hospital in a Knell ambulance, where it was revealed he suffered fracture of several ribs, head lacerations and internal injuries.

Started to Pass Truck.

Johnson was in a motor car driven west by Glenn Haizlip, 21, living eleven miles northeast of Carthage on route 8. Haizlip said he started to pass a truck when he was blinded by the headlights of a car going east. The motor cars sideswiped and overturned.

Miss Pauletta Bayless, 20 years old, of Carthage, who was in the motor car driven by Southern, received minor cuts to her head and left eye. She was released from the hospital after examination.

Johnson was a lifetime resident of Jasper county, and a graduate of Carthage high school. He later attended Rude's business college here. Surviving are four brothers, Frank Johnson of route 8, Mark Johnson, Glenn Johnson and Ollie Johnson, all at home, and four sisters, Elizabeth Johnson, Fern Johnson, Martha Johnson and Dorothy Johnson, all at home.

Haizlip is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Haizlip, residing eleven miles northeast of Carthage.

Miss Bayless is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Bayless, 821 West Eldorado street, Carthage.
