Daily Gate City and Constitution-Democrat, September 25, 191711346
Mrs. Belle Brackett Joy, wife of Clyde R. Joy, died at her home, 816 Grand avenue last evening at 7:10 o'clock after a lingering illness extending over a period of five years. A Keokuk resident since 1890, Mrs. Joy was prominently known in Keokuk through her identification with musical, social and philanthropic organizations. She was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances and her death will be deeply regretted and the sympathy of the community extended to the bereaved family.
Mrs. Joy was a native of Lee county, having been born at Denmark, Iowa, June 12, 1866, a daughter of Gustavus B. and Ann Brackett. Her father was captain of a company of engineers during the civil war and was for many years a pomologist of the department of agriculture of the United States government. He died in Washington two years ago. Mrs. Joy's early life was spent in Denmark. Her marriage to Clyde R. Joy occurred October 23, 1890 in Chicago, where the Brackett family was spending the winter. Dr. McPherson of the Second Presbyterian church officiating. She had been a resident of Keokuk since that time.
Besides her husband, who is a member of the firm of S. F. Baker & company and connected with a number of other important Keokuk enterprises, Mrs. Joy is survived by three children: Ralph B. Joy, Mrs. Hugh J. Robertson and Carroll Joy. The latter recently entered the United States naval academy at Annapolis. He has been notified of his mother's death and is expected home for the funeral. Ralph Joy served in the Iowa national guard on the border in the supply department but later secured his discharge because of ill health. There is also one surviving siters, Mrs. Alice B. Dewing of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Mrs. Joy united with the Congregational church in Denmark and when she moved to Keokuk, transferred her letter to the local church and had always taken an active and prominent part in religious affairs. She was especially interested in philanthropic work and was a director of the Visiting Nurse association.
Mrs. Joy was also well known in the social life of the city, but her interest was largely in musical affairs. She was one of the organizers and charter members of the Monday Music club, which was founded here in 1900 and since that time until ill health interfered, had taken a very active part in the affairs of the organization. She was a member of the executive committee for many years, was chairman of the chorus committee at the time "The Messiah" was given, and a member of the chorus committee for "The Elijah." Mrs. Joy possessed a trained, low contralto voice and she was prominent on the programs of the club as a soloist and also sang in the ladies' trio and octet. For many years she was also a member of the choir of the Congregational church.
The funeral will be held at the home tomorrow morning at 10:30 o'clock. The Rev. R. A. Waite of Chicago will officiate and the Rev. H. B. McElree of the United Presbyterian church will assist. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.
