Elwyn L. KECHLEY Age 97, born July 20, 1910 in Ord, NE to Rev. and Mrs. Edward L. Kechley, passed away in Seattle, WA Feb 22, 2008. Preceded in death by his wife, Esther Sumway, and his brother, Ralph Kechley, a teacher and outstanding trombonist. Survived by his brother, Gerald Kechley, of Seattle, nephews David, of Williamstown, MA, and Robert and Stephen Kechley, of Seattle. Graduated from Chehalis High School where he received high honors as clarinet soloist, and from Washington State University, where he continued his musical pursuits, earned a degree in Journalism, and was a member of ATO. Elwyn and Ralph made several trips to the Orient as part of a ship's orchestra, which they organized. A gradual deterioration in Elwyn's hearing subsequently made his pursuit of music impossible, and he turned to journalism and writing, resulting in libretti for 2 operas: ''The Beckoning Fair One'' and ''The Golden Lion'', with music by Gerald, both premiered in Seattle with a number of subsequent performances. A later collaboration, ''Daedalus and the Minotaur'', was premiered by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. He also wrote an unpublished novel, ''Boy Blow Your Horn'', drawing on his early musical experiences and trips abroad. During World War II, Elwyn trained and became a lead welder building ships in the war effort. Private services will be held at a later date.
