A wedding that will be of interest to the many friends of the contracting parties took place in Marshall, Friday, December 20, at 5:30 p. m., when Miss Mary Jane Irvine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Irvine of the county became the bride of Mr. Ephraim Markey of Jefferson City. The marriage was quietly solemnized at the Baptist parsonage, with Rev. Everett Gill, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiating.
Miss Irvine was graduated from Marshall high school and Stephens College at Columbia, and for the last three years has taught at Malta Bend. Mr. Markey was athletic director for Marshall high school for eight years, before resigning last year to accept a similar position with the high school at Jefferson City. The bride was at the high school while Mr. Markey was athletic director and it was then that the friendship began, which resulted in the marriage Friday.
Mr. and Mrs. Markey left in their car for a few days in Kansas City. They will return Tuesday evening to the home of her parents, where on Christmas Day, a family dinner will be held. After the first of the year they will be at home to their friends at Jefferson City.

Ephraim A. Markey, 78, of 12217 E. 50th Terrace, Independence, a former coach at Northeast High School and vice principal at East High School, died Friday at Baptist Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Markey was vice principal of East six years before retiring in 1970. He coached football, basketball and track at Northeast from 1937 to 1955, leading six championship teams. From 1955 to 1958 he was a physical education consultant for the Kansas City school district and from 1958 to 1964 he was vice principal at Northeast.
He formerly had coached in Marshall, Jefferson City and Nevada, Mo. Mr. Markey played football and basketball at Central Missouri State Teachers College, where he received a bachelor's degree in 1921. He received a master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1935. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa fraternity.
In 1948, Mr. Markey received the Knute Rockne Prep Coach of the Year Award and in 1971 he was selected as one of the 10 outstanding athletes in the history of Central Missouri State University. He was a member of the National Education Association.
He was born in Warrensburg, Mo., and had lived in this area most of his life. Mr. Markey was an Army veteran of World War I.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mary Jane Markey of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Jane Walker, Norfolk, Va.; a brother, Glenn Markey, Topeka, and two sisters, Mrs. Leona Pfeffermann and Mrs. Annabelle Spicer of Washington, Mo.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the Carson Blue Ridge Chapel; burial at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ridge Park Cemetery, Marshall, Mo. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. The family requests no flowers and suggests contributions to the Ephraim A. Markey Memorial Athletic Fund at the Blue Ridge Bank ad Trust Co., Independence.

Mary Jane Markey, 85, of the Hidden Lake Care Center, Raytown, a former teacher, died June 19, 1994, at Park Lane Medical Center. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Ridge Park Cemetery, Marshall, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the E.A. and Mary Jane Markey scholarship fund at Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg.
Mrs. Markey taught first grade at Thatcher Elementary School for 20 years, retiring in 1975. She received a teaching degree from CMSU and an associate's degree from Stephens College in Columbia. She was a member of the Kansas City Athenaeum. She was a member of the Northeast Presbyterian Church. Her husband, E. A. "Coach" Markey, died in 1978. She was born in Saline County, Mo., and had lived in this area since 1935.
Survivors include a daughter, Jane Markey Walker, Norfolk, Va., and a sister, Nellie Irvine Laidlaw, Temp, Ariz.
