Weekly Democrat-News, August 10, 191611088
A marriage which was a surprise even to the relatives and closest friends of the contracting parties was quietly celebrated at the Faris home, Monday, August 7 at 3:30 p. m. Rev. A. R. Faris, officiating minister, Russell B. Nicholas and Miss Alice R. Irvine was the contracting couple. The groom drove to the country home of the bride, in the Fairville neighborhood Monday afternoon and it was thought by the family that the couple were going to have a drive to Miami, but instead they came to Marshall and were married as stated above. Miss Alice went to White's Ladies Finishing store to make a few purchases after arriving in town but no one seemed to catch on that a marriage was on the table.
Byron Bridges and Miss Bina Cooper accompanied the couple to the Faris home and witnessed the nuptials. The newly married couple left immediately for Boonville in the Nicholas car and after reaching the Vine Clad City the bride sent a message to her mother of the marriage and the groom wired his father, both messages said they would return to Marshall today. The bride who is the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Irvine of the Fairville neighborhood is bright, winsome and lovable in disposition and character. She has spent much of her time for several years past in Marshall with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Irvine and is popular in the social life of our city. She is a graduate of the Marshall high school having been a member of the class [of] 1914. The bride being from one of Saline's fine old pioneer families the unexpected marriage has elicited much interest not only in Marshall but in the Fairville neighborhood. The groom who has been partially reared in Marshall is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred B. Nicholas and one of the proprietors of the Nicholas Auto Livery. He is one of Marshall's highly esteemed young business men and is no doubt worthy of the bride he has won. He is also a graduate of the Marshall high school having come to Marshall from Kansas City when only ten years old to make his home with his grand-parents, Mr. and Mrs. Berryman Aulgur of 501 North English and go to school. He and his father went into the auto livery business soon after his graduation. The bride and groom are received the congratulations of a wide circle of friends.
