Stewart K. Evans, 74; Ex-Flagstaff Park Owner

Stewart K. Evans of 77 W. Broadway, Jim Thorpe, who retired four years ago after serving 34 years as Carbon County surveyor and engineer, died yesterday in Gnaden Huetton Hospital, Lehighton. He was 74.

He was elected county surveyor and engineer in 1928.

A veteran of World War I, he served in France with the 11th Engineers.

He was president and general manager of the Switchback Railroad when the scenic attraction ceased operation in 1933. In 1938, he purchased Flagstaff Park in Jim Thorpe, which he and his wife operated until he sold much of the property several years ago.

At one time, he served as fire chief of Mauch Chunk and was an honorary member of Marion Hose Co., Jim Thorpe.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Jim Thorpe.

Surviving with his widow, the former Mabel McCollister of Canton, Ohio, are a son Stewart K. Jr. of Jim Thorpe, and three grandchildren.

Private services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe. There will be no viewing.

Mrs. Mabel L. Evans

Mrs. Mabel L. Evans, 88, of 945 Coal St., Lehighton, died Thursday in Gnaden Huetton Hospital, Lehighton. SHe was the widow of Stewart K. Evans, who died in 1966.

Born in Bradford, McKean County, she was a daughter of the late Mark and Alice McCollister.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Lehighton.

Surviving are a son Stewart, with whom she resided; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.
