McKean County Miner, November 16, 19115091
The Bradford Ear of Friday says: Mark J. McCollister, of No. 134 Pleasant street, a well known citizen, met death in a shocking manner when a shotgun which he carried, was accidentally discharged yesterday. The fatality occurred between 9 a. m. and noon, on Newell hill, north of Bradford hospital.
Mr. McCollister left home early in the morning for a hunting trip. He had a single-barreled shotgun and was alone. The weapon was an old gun and one that could easily be discharged. He had been out hunting with it the day before.
About 11 o'clock yesterday morning a Summer street lad, named Sobel, was returning from a hunting trip on the hill north of the Third ward when he came upon the body of Mr. McCollister lying in the road, which extends from Pleasant street to the top of Newell hill.
A ghastly wound in the left breast and the shotgun lying near by told the story of what had happened.
Young Sobel hurried down town and informed Chief Murray of the finding of the body. The chief, with Coroner Sherman, went to the scene of the shooting and after an investigation, both were of the opinion that the man's death was purely accidental. The body was but a few feet from a barbed wire fence and scratches seen on the stock of the gun indicated that the weapon had been pushed through the wire fence by the hunter and that it was then the accident happened. The clothing and wound showed that the gun was close at hand when discharged. Death must have been instantaneous. Word was sent to the man's wife and family and Undertaker Still was directed to take charge of the body. Later the remains were taken to the late home of the deceased.
Mr. McCollister was a stone mason by trade and had lived in Bradford for many years. His age was about 55 years. He was an industrious and estimable citizen and had many friends.
He is survived by his widow, three children, Gladys, William and Mabel McCollister, in addition to two sons and one daughter by a former wife.
