Paul McNeely

Paul Pierre McNeely, 94, who taught piano for a half-century in Tacoma and Seattle, died Friday.

Mr. McNeely had resided in Seattle for 50 years, but until recent years had come to Tacoma each Thursday and Friday to teach music here.

Until he moved to Tacoma a year ago, he had resided in an apartment on the top floor of Seattle's Paramount Theater building at 907 Pine St., one of the structure's first occupants.

Mr. McNeely, a native of Marshall, Mo., held degrees in music from Washburn College and the universities of Kansas, Pennsylvania and Columbia. He had studied in Europe with Joseph Lhevine and Rudolph Ganz.

In 1966 Mr. McNeely received the Steinway Award for his contribution to the cultural richness of the community.

Mr. McNeely was a Mason and a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity.

Survivors include a nephew, John T. Kirby of Lakewood, and several nephews and nieces in the Midwest.

Butterworth Family Mortuary, Seattle is in charge.
